I have a job and I prefer to refill the chalk bag that I have. I think it does a better job than the non-refillable kind. Also, you don't have to keep going to the store to buy a new bag.

ive got one of those pantyhose chalk balls, complements of my mother. buy chalk in a block, shove a good chunk into the ball till its tight or till youve got as much as you want and crush the chalk ball up in your chalk bag. no mess at all.

Chalk balls never seem to layer my hands with enough chalk anyway. I'm always dipping every minute. loose chalk is the only way to go for sweaty pigs like myself

check this out.. i buy bison blocks...put it into a nalgene w/ 2 or 3 golf balls then shake the crap out of it for 5 or 10 min. this gets its sooo soft (even more than store bought)the get a dr. p bottle (specifically for the shape) cut it on half pout the chalk in and use a pen to pack it down all the time while keeping it in my chalk bag..its the best method EVER

I have to dip into my chalk bag every move or two. I feel insecure without fresh chalk on my fingers. I have very moist hands. I am a self-prolaimed "Chalk-Whore". I've had fellow climbers make remarks such as "You spend more time chalking up than you do climbing!". The sad thing is that it is true. Metolius Super Chalk is crappy for me. When its in a chalk ball, it only lightly dusts my hands. Unless you dump loads of loose chalk into your chalk bag, you don't get enough usable chalk. I've been thinking of just getting a new 1/2 lb. bag of chalk and dumping it into my chalk bag.

!!LOOSE CHALK!!

I have a chalk ball, but I got tired of refilling it. I just leave it in my chalk bag. It gets enough chalk on it that I just grab the ball when I am on a route, and it is usually just enough to get me by for a few moves. Really conserves chalk that way as well, since I'm not dumping a bunch of loose chalk on my belayers!

The liquid chalk stuff is nice for pre-prepping your hands before a route, nice to have a chalk bag too for reapplying on the way up. For you chalk whores, they compliment each other well.
I watched Fred N and Scott Milton working a severly upside down problem on North Mountain at Hueco and was surprised to see they were using they above method. Seemed to work, they were sending tough - oh wait..Those guys are tough!
