Hey guys. Quick question. Does anyone have a good way to re-label a rope? Sterling ropes are great and all but their labels suck. If the ink doesn't smudge then the label end up falling off. I have two sterling ropes both less then two months old and both have either unreadable or missing labels. Thanks!

Are we trolling? Ok I'll bite. Why would you care, it is probably the same rope it was when you bought it? Do you have so many ropes you can't tell them apart?

no, I'm not trolling. It's a legite question. I have a few ropes that have very similar color patterns and some are 50m and some 60m. That fact, combined with my horrible memory makes it very easy for me to confuse them. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? yeah, dont buy ropes with similar color patterns.... end labels dont last- its a fact of life, and usually not an issue....

When I get a new rope, I weigh it and measure the length (my "60m" ropes vary from 205' to 220'). I take a picture and print it out and then I tape the picture to my kitchen wall with the info on length, weight, and when I bought it.

I would be willing - without any specific evidence I know of - to wrap the very end of the rope with tape (or heat shrink tubing) as a label. Even if the adhesive adversely affected the rope it was on, the strength of that last inch of cordage isn't an issue. I WOULD NOT DO THIS ANYWHERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROPE! But, at the end, I don't see a problem with it. OK, hunkers down, prepares for flames (which just might melt my rope).

As stated, clear shrink wrap tubing works well. I've seen a couple different folks in rescue and caving that label their ropes this way. Usually they put in information such as when and where it was bought, make, model, etc. Quite frankly I've surprised myself a couple times when I tracked down the actual date I bought a rope and compared it to about how old I was thinking it was.

Bill, thats a great suggestion. I have always been more concerned with the age of my ropes and their length rather then what brand or diameter they are. I shall try to get my hands on some clear heat shrink. Thanks!

Just be aware that, when you label a rope with the length, and then, at a later time, cut out a bad section, the labelling does not automatically update itself.
