The sole reason I climb is so all the girls can see my muscles.......just kidding.

I climb because It allows me to test myself be it a hard redpoint or some moderate solo I like the mental aspect of it.

Rock climbing helps me to forget about all my problems. It is a way for freedom of everything. To escape the pressures of the world.

Ditto, to all the above. I know, I amaze myself when I find a smoother way to climb. My breath, finding it and then I try again. I acheive a goal, and not give in. Nothing like a true(natural)high, and the big smile after acheiving that goal, whatever it is. It just Feels good.

I was just talking w/ a coworker and he asked why or what I like so much about climbing, it's all I talk about, and this is what I came up with:

Conciously, I know that if I do everything correctly, I won't get hurt.
But subconciously, I'm in fear for my life, which causes the release of lots of adrenaline and endorphins as part of the 'fight or flight' instinct.

So I would have to say that I am "hooked" to those nuero-peptides.

Make sense ???

Well, it's not just one thing...

Since I don't climb indoors, part of it is the chance to commune with nature on a personal and spiritual level. I love going out where there are no other people around and just taking it all in.

There's also a moment in climbing when all is right with the world, if just for a moment. Everything else fades away and it's just you and the rock. You begin to "flow" and you see nothing but the moves, as if you've known them forever and it feels like you're dreaming as you link move after practiced move.

It's a chance to bond with your partner, a man (or woman) that you have a kinship with, one with whom you trust your very life....daily. There's an understanding between you that goes beyond words, two people who look at the same thing and see it the same way - a rarity in this world.

The physical challenge of pushing through the pump and the legs that you can't seem to WILL to stop shaking to stick the move.....especially when everything in you tells you that you're going to fall.

These are just a few of the things that I go to the crag to find.

Mick

*wow, kinda surprised myself there*

Among so many reasons, many of them described by rck_climber, one of the reasons I climb is to get out my daily comfort zone and entrenchmant. On the best days, the focus is so clean and true, I'm practically transported to a sense of timelessness. I feel unsure of how much time may have passed, and I don't care.

Another thing I've noticed in the areas where I climb, is that it doesn't matter what people do for a living, or too much how old or young they are, and it doesn't matter too much what level of difficultly different climbers are climbing on. Generally, the vast majority of people are out there supporting the good time being sought, and usually had, by everyone. I can't find that anywhere else.

I would say I love to climb simply because it feels right.... It is one hell of a natural high.

Plus I am addicted!

Of course not, but what does it mean to you? That's the question. While some of us climb for the same types of reasons, others climb for entirely different reasons.

We just like to hear why you do it, what it means to you.

Duh its for the sponsorships I can't really explain the reasons why I like to climb. Partly because its fun, a great stress reliever, male-dominated and its just an all around great sport.

I climb because of the challenge at hand. The rush that comes over me when I get on the rock. That and just being outside enjoying nature are the main reasons that I climb. Climbing is what gets me up in the morning, hey it is what I love.

I could say all the usual "feeling of accomplishment", "good excercise", "fresh air", "meet/impress girls" stuff, but the real reason I climb.... so I can come to this website and know what you all are talking about.
There. I came clean. That's my reason.

I don't really know why I climb. It's just one of the greatest things I do, especially the beautiful routes (to me).

I climb for the rush dude!!! (flashes hang loose symbol)
Just kidding, This is one of those situations where if you have to ask the question then you won't understand the answer. I am sure that the answer is different for everybody and that is what is so great about this sport. You can do it for the glory, the challenge, the chicks, whatever it doesn't really matter and these reasons can change over time.
I think that the main attraction to climbing for me is that it is a kind of cliff notes (pardon the pun) version of life. The same skills, attitudes and behaviors that make one a successful (I know the definition of successful is relative) climber are the same things that make you successful in whatever you shoose to pursue. Being a climber has given me the confidence and tools to become a better person in all aspects of my life. If you think about what it takes to complete a climb it is the basically the same things it takes to run a business, do well in school, be a good parent etc. Before you leave the ground you need to have the right knowledge, skills and equipment required to safely climb the route and surround yourself with good people who you trust. People say that climbers are risk takers but I would disagree with that. Climbers are kind of like entrepreneurs in a sense that they take an initial risk and then from that point on they are trying to minimize and control the risks in order to create a successful venture (climb). Thats my .02 and other people may have different views on this subject but thats just fine with me.

it seems like everything in this world travels at a 100 mph, in 100 directions at once, my head included. A thousand thoughts at once. Climbing is how I find solace. Sometimes it's harder than others, but generally it works. It's cheap therapy. It's one of the few things I can focus mind and body as one. it gives me a sence of satisfaction, of something acomplished, of a job well done.

yes you are very right, climbing is all about self setisfaction.obvoisly the grades are ipmortant for you to keep a record of your improvements and for an incentive to push a little bit more, but when climbing becames a competion you will loose all the fun.I have been climbing for these last 13years but I took it seriosly for these last 4 years, that why I think that climbing should not be a competion because self setiscation is what kept me climbing all these years.
