So after toying with tons of different hardware I've began wondering if those old figure 8's we've been relegating to ebay & the bottom of our gear closest wouldn't be better to use for the highline attachment point for a leash than steel rap rings.
Their rated, we belay off them (ok, historically anyway) and they have a large clearance with minimal weight compared to steel rings.
Is there any obvious reason why figure 8's aren't more commonly used?

They have been used and work fine. Rap rings are not as expensive. Always use two.

My mate has used them ok before, My only slight concern is that 'if' a mainline were to break on a long line then they might get quite hot in the same way that a belay does on a long abseil. I have just bought a pair of 4" x 1/2" (boat mooring) rings and have them on seperate rope, taped every foot or so:
Areyoumydude, do you have a specific reason to say always use 2?

I'm sure one would be fine but two is your back up. I also like to use two leashes for the same reason.
