I'm going be roadtripping around the SW US and was thinking about heading through Mexico part of the time... Copper Canyon sounds like the place to be, but it's pretty far away from where I'm going to be in Arizona given the amount of time I have. Is there anything cool closer to the US border in the Sierra Madres? I'm looking for challenging backpacking, the views from Copper Canyon look amazing. Also, in the event that I do end up in Copper Canyon, would I be crazy not to get a guide?

Hopefully someone reads this forum... Thanks a lot in advance.

Marc

I was in the upper portion of copper canyon this past october. I highly recommend visiting. If you are backpacking by yourself, it's mighty remote. We had a guide and he was worth it. We used Rancho San Lorenzo as a base and had the comforts of home. You can either camp or pay for a cabin. They can steer you to the canyons that you could enjoy safely. PM for more info.
