I realize this is a bit early, but I heard that when the bridge is opened up for base jumping, that it is (or was) opened up for rappeling also. I think its something like 800+ feet. That is just what I have heard though. If you have, what gear were you using to rappel for so long a distance, and when/how do you go about the whole thing, like do you have to sign up ahead of time?

My belay device gets hotted up going 90 ft. It must be hot enough to melt the sheath of the rope after 800'. Assuming you can find a 800' rope that is.

You'd probably want to use a rappel rack like cavers do. Much more metal to disperse the heat over and it doesn't bend the rope as drastically as an 8 or ATC so the friction is more dispersed over the bars.

I'm not POSITIVE about this at all, but I do remember reading about this and seeing pictures on the NRG park site. this is not the site but has some of the info http://www.nps.gov/...rvisit/nrgbridge.htm the date is the third saturday of october. On that site they say parachuting & rapelling demos- so it may be hard to get on the list of people allowed to do it. BTW 876' off the river. rapp rack would be good, but i'd want something w/ auto stop like a shunt personally. Can you imagine just stopping like halfway down- 400' up is a bridge and nothing under you for another 400? daaaamn.

My dad's done Bridge Day 5-6 times. They get a spool of static rope from PMI (somewhere around 1000') and I think everyone on their team usually uses a rack (mentioned above). You definitely have to sign up several months ahead of time and they have certain requirements: you have to do a 300+ foot rappel (or something like that). I think you usually sign up as a team (sharing a rope). Not sure of any details, though, as far as who to contact for signing up. I was offered a chance to do this a few years back: umm, no thanks! Too spooky
