Okay obviously i can't ask about the problems this up coming year, but whats the typical range of grades for the qualifiers and then the nationals? I'm more curious about the junior division.

Are you asking about the Junior Male category for the ABS Bouldering Nationals in Maryland or the Sport Climbing Nationals in Ann Arbor?

If you were askng about the Male Junior (aka 18 & 19) roped Youth Nationals, the on-sight event typically consists of a Friday qualifyer round consisting of two climbs, Saturday semifinals and Sunday finals. The route setters know who will be attending and would adjust the route accordingly. However generally the routes would progress from 12 a-b to 13 c-d.

My son is in youth D ABS Nationals and is wondering if the setters adjust for the shorter guys/gals? Any tips for his first time at an onsight? Thanx

The setters are aware of who is competing at the comp, and set the routes accordingly. Reach should not be an issue, but he should expect hard routes at a National Level competition. At an 'Onsite" competition, a climber is scored for how high on a route he/she reaches, not just for finishing the route. My suggestion is to listen to his judge and ask any questions about the route before he starts to climb, don't waste all his energy trying to finish the first couple of routes if he knows he can't finish the route, enjoy the fact that he qualified to get there, and most of all, have fun!

thank you for the reply. He will be happy to hear that as reach is the only thing that holds him back.

I would guess that the qualifiers will be in the V6-8 range

We went and had a great time. He missed finals by 120 points but had a great time. He came in 12th out of 22 so not bad for a nine year old with no coach and very little practice. The routes were cool and challenging (he did not get route 4) and we all had fun.
