I don't think I am the only one that does this, but as you are postholing through that fresh dump of snow, or hauling loads up from basecamp, or frontpointing up that 50 degree snow face, what song or saying repeatedly goes through your head, that you synchronize your breathing to, or time your steps to...

I have been known to sing ROXANNE at the top of my lungs...you know, step step...ROXANNE...breathe, step, step...YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT ON THE RED LIGHT...step, step, breathe...THOSE DAYS ARE OVER...step, breathe...and so on and so forth!!!

I usually sing cadences from my years in the Corps. I know, I know...another "jar head"..but they really help keep my mind off the pain of hauling my rack, two ropes, a gallon of water, lunch, rain gear, inflatable sheep, spare tire, stove, cooking utensils, 20 pounds of rock my kid collected, and whatever else may have crawled into my pack..
Sometimes I hum folk songs as well...

Norm's honest truth, I sing the Hukilau song and Somewhere Over the Rainbow on arduous approaches and slogs.
The one song that is absolutely verboten on ANY trip I'm part of is the Gilligan's Island theme. We're talking justifiable homicide here kids...

I'm glad there's a couple of us still out there.
I do the same thing, singing cadences as I slog. I think it's part of the brainwashing we underwent - it's automatic now.

I figure if I'm bringing in 120 pounds of crap to spend 3 weeks (or more) on a remote mountain, a walkman, spare batteries, and some cassette tapes isn't going to be that much extra weight to really matter.
Metallica's Master Of Puppets album has a good driving beat throughout. I think our second push up the fixed lines on the 800' headwall above 14000 camp on Denali only took 40 minutes with the rhythm of the masters of metal.
When not using the headset, I tend to have Dave Matthews Band running through my head. Various songs. Not sure why, other than that I like the band and have heard the songs alot, so maybe it's just bouncing around up there in my memory or something.

When I'm not singing, I tend to make up very stupid algebra problems and solve them. Like: if I travel 3 feet with each step, how many steps per minute must I take to travel a mile in 20 minutes.

usually i put in Slayer into the cd player in the car just as I'm lacing up my boots and just crank it.

It's funny how many of us use songs from the Wizard of OZ. I can't remember any chants for the aproach but when I'm leading and feeling sketch I always sing "If I only Had a Brain"
When stuck on endless belay or just stranded on a wall the chant is:

I believe they were supposed to be SILVER slippers, not ruby, but because silver just doesn't look nice in old movie film, they made them red. It was supposed to represent a silver money standard that the farmers wanted. It was an easy solution all along is supposed to be the idea. I guess the book was some kind of polical alegory, but no one knows nor cares about that today. Oz was Washinton DC.
So try gluing a couple silver dollars to your boots next time. Easy answers!

the MP3 player with a good mix of harder alternative and some softer stuff is great. Second the Bruce Hornsby! But stuff like Our Lady Peace, Better than Ezra etc.. keeps my mind off of the pain.
