Just when I'd resigned to the fact that I'd have to climb at a terrible gym on the 1 day off I have a week, I found a treat in a Cary, NC public park... Here in North Carolina till Dec. on a job working 12 hrs a day 6 days a week doesn't leave time to get on the sharp end. My fiance and I found a TERRIBLE gym that would have to do, no choice right??? At a public park just up the street from where I'm staying, I find 2 hand-made 'faux boulders'. They are perfectly made, 'bout 9 feet high, verticle to well overhung, crimpers, slopers, great friction, and soft mulched wood to land on. It really is beautiful, and VERY functional. Problems go from V-easy to V-SICK !!! Looks like I'm a 'boulderer' for a while. rrrADAM [ This Message was edited by: rrradam on 2001-09-27 22:00 ]

What is a faux boulder? What kind of rock is it made of? How are they made? [ This Message was edited by: kagunkie on 2001-09-27 22:45 ]

faux means fake, in french I think. I THINK it's built around a fiber-glass frame, and covered with dark gray colored concrete of thick grout. It's very featured to slick. Good texture, kinda like the Buttermilks. I'll try to get a little more info in the future from the 'faux boulderes'. I'll try to get a pic of it submitted, but I gotta take one 1rst. rrraDAM

It would be really cool to bring in a REAL boulder and not any crappy little twenty ton piece of crap either, a REAL hundred ton whopper and sculpt it especially for climbing on. It would have to be some kind of relatively softer rock, like sandstone or limestone might be good. you could build your "sculpture" in pieces and assemble a whole area. Maby if I win the lottery.....
