Mmmm...yummy!

Actually I just got married about 6 months ago and climbing was a relatively big factor when I was considering a ring choice. For those of you about to take the plunge, realize that while titanium and tungsten-carbide rings are more durable than gold, they are also harder (if not impossible) to cut off of your finger should you need to.

In other words, don't climb with your ring on!

That's actually one of the reasons my husband and I went with gold rather than Ti. I had images in my head of just hiking around with the rings on and hurting the finger and not being able to cut the ring off.

We also wanted something custom made. I don't think you can get custom designes rings out of Ti.

Gold is a soft metal that could easily get scratched up. I even take my ring off climbing indoors.

Edited to add: Holy crap, that's nasty!

I'll be getting my wedding ring in another two months and I was shure to size it so I can take it off when I climb. I spoke with the jeweler about titanium and tungsten and the rumor about not being able to cut them off. The jeweler basically said that's total bullshit. The saws and blades they have can easily cut off titanium and tungsten; it will just dull that blade so bad it can't be used again. Conversely when used to cut gold rings a blade can be used for at least a year without having to be replaced.

Still, that's gotta hurt.

*shudders* I actually quit wearing a ring when I started climbing. I got tired of taking it off every time I climbed and often forgot and pulled it on holds. This makes me glad I gave it up. Once I get married I will have to be more careful though. I know a guy who dropped his wedding band down a multi pitch slab route. Needless to say, he never found it.

That is truly foul but I can't say I have ever thought to keep my ring on while climbing. Is it just me or is the risk of an injury really an afterthought in deciding not to wear a ring climbing? I would have thought that the lack of comfort and traction would have been enough.

Either way, now I have some ammo for the wife when she asks why I leave the wedding band in the sock drawer when I head out.

Is that a class ring in that picture. That is probably more dangerous than a wedding ring. Anyway I'm always fighting with my wife about the ring issue. I can't wait to show her this. I think the medical term for tis is de-gloved

I told my wife that I do not want to wear ring cause I am climber and things happen.

She keep saying no, YOU ARE MARRIED NOW, you have to wear it.

I got my proof now

That's going to smart in the morning! Gee, I don't feel so bad about my little finger injury anymore. So, where are the complete amputation shots? I mean, there's no going back from there. How, exactly, did that happen?

These exact photos were posted on these forums a while back, maybe a couple years ago. They aren't from climbing, but some Navy accident.

That said, these photos are my main justification for not wearing a ring while climbing, or working outside. I just pop it on my keychain. I often forget to put it back on, which drives my wife nuts.

Other than being the mother of all flappers, it's technically called a ring avulsion. Can occurr when the ring gets snagged on an object and tears the skin away from its attachments. In severe case, the underlying muscle can also be involved. As bad as this one looks, image what would have happened if it had pulled completely off? It's been known to happen to folks playing basketball who snag their ring on the rim. Ouch.

About the most disgusting photos I've seen in a couple years. Gross.
