I am trying to come up with a relatively inexpensive but safe way to lift a fall victim out of a gulley or low spot. Is there some type of pulley system or motor that could be used to rescue the victim?

There is a mechanical rescue winch with steel cable that works with both hydraulic and or hand operated . I saw the unit and its operation when I was in Chamonix - France visiting their mountain SAR unit. it is expensive but Europeans love it.

If you need the info, email me but overall, rope and few pulley would be your cheapest and safest system to use.

Get the book, Self-Rescue it'll teach you how to use prussiks to make a 2 to 1 and 5 to 1 system.

I would definatly start with the how and what. A simple zpulley set up can be used if you have a couple rescuers. If not a Z-C can be set up. Ither of these takes not much more than a couple pulleys, the rope, and some prussicks or slings. The challenge is these require training.

A friend has a sign in his shop that applies to your question.
" We do three kinds of work 1)Quick, 2) Good, and 3)cheap. You may choose any two

Think of it as every corner you cut requires some other concession. Ie. if you want a quick good system it ain't gunna be cheap.

I'm with green on this one. If you have anything that is too mechanical and the person gets stuck coming up, you have a system failure.
