Hey all, My best friend and climbing partner is moving across the country to the Sacramento area. I'm putting together a "welcome to Sac" gift pack and I want some great climbing items. Can anyone recommend a comprehensive climbing guidebook for Sac and the surrounding areas. I used to live out that way, but can't recall a good title. Thanks.

The climbing in sacramento... not much! but he'll be close to a lot. Lake Tahoe--either the carville or the supertopo Yosemite Rock Climbs of the Sonora Pass Highway-Brad Young Wine Country Rocks--chris summit and your favorite, the Vacaville boulders I'm told those are mapped out in the soon to be released, bay area bouldering supertopo. all within 2 hours, except the valley (which is a scant 2:45 if yer quick.

Thanks for the advice, and oh yes, I do love the Vacaville boulders. When I was in Sac I never climbed there much, but I heard there was some sport near there. Any info on those areas? What about San Fran and the boulders in Berkley? Thanks all

there is some sport. 30 miles away from Sac in Auburn there is a quarry with about 50 bolted routes. It's a fun spot. Unfortunately, it is currently illegal to climb there, long story. Still, quite poachable. There is info on the routes database here.

Any info on those areas? What about San Fran and the boulders in Berkley? Thanks all Mt. Diablo or Mt. St. Helena are the only "known" sport areas relatively close to Vacaville. All the Bay Area stuff is allright when the good stuff isn't seasonably available, but you're going to want to make that weekend (weekday if you're lucky) trek to the Sierras, Yosemite, etc. Indian Rock in Berkeley, as well as previously mentioned areas are listed in the routes database. Most Bay Area spots really are not worth a trip from Sacramento unless you are squeezing in a session before some other, worthier plans. Trust me.

thanks for all the advice. I guess my exact question is; if you were moving to Sacramento what climbing guidebooks would you go buy? Thanks

I just wanted to convey that most Bay Area climbing is only worthwhile as a local. Then again, when I lived in Sacramento I made several longer trips to the Bay Area. Anyway, Dingus is right on the money for guidebooks. Supertopo.com sells decent editions for both areas. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy climbing in the Bay Area and Central Valley, but it is mostly a joke in comparison to what the Sierras offer.
