I will be travelling for work to Japan for work in a week (short notice, for sure!) and wondering if there is any climbing around Aomori City. I know I am posting this in the Hokkaido regional section, but that is the closest I can find in the route database from my very limited knowledge of Japan. I will be there for approximately four weeks, and looking for any outdoor sport or bouldering, or indoor gyms. Looks like the weather may be too cold for outdoors, is that true? Even a gym would helpful to stay in shape, since I will be missing the start of rock season in New England! I searched the forums, and the posts seem to be primarily regarding climbing near Tokyo or in the south. Looks like there are some sport and trad spots in Hokkaido, but I understand its a 4 hour ferry ride just to get from Aomori to Hakodate. I am primarily interested in day trips, as I will likely be working 6 days a week. Though I may be able to tack on a few vacation days at the end of the trip. I would also be interested in finding any climbing partners to meet up w. while I am there. I don't speak a lick of Japanese, by the way.

Hey redpoint73 just wanted to update you on the climbing in northern japan, I'll be heading out there in two weeks myself but will be in Niseko which is about an hour north from where you are staying I believe. I'm meeting up with the my partner for some climbing during golden week which is the 1st week of May. As far as where you are and free time you'll have, best shot is going into the city, Sapporo, which I'm guessing is where you are flyining into and doing some gym climbing there. I'm not too sure if the area you'll be in will have gyms. Niseko has a little wall, not too interesting so I was told. I'm gonna do two days in a gym when I fly in with a girlfriend in Sapporo, then Jason, my partner and I will be heading east to an area called shimukappu, east south of Furano (center of hokkaidao), thats about a six seven hour drive from where i'll be. They have some pretty burly sport routes there. Short but powerful, from 10s to 13s there. Mostly over hanging and face. It will still be cold and probably a little wet since snow will be melting a bit... What will your means of commute be? If you get some time off during golden week, we'll be camping and climbing in shimukappu get out there and you'll have ppl who speak english to climb with
