I was driving around the other night in North Burligton and took a good look at the cliff on Dundas (highway 5) just West of Brant street and thinking "that doesn't look half bad... It could be fun, if it wasn't right against the road." Most of us have seen places like this plan it out for a moment, dismiss it and move on. Out of curiosity what places have you seen that you would like to climb but your judgement gets the better of you? For me other than the one I justed mentioned there is also: - In Burlington the rocks on highway 6 south of highway 5 (although they look pretty loose) - Any of the Rock North of Parry Sound, South of Sudbury (again aganst the road or too much of a hike into the bush) - The back wall of the old INCO quarry in Sudbury (I think it's the Criton Mine and its private property ) [ This Message was edited by: downshift on 2001-09-24 21:24 ]

The rock along the 403 just past the linc going towards hamilton, it's on the right hand side. It's a little loose though, which is obvious since the fence there is designed to take a rockslide impact. Also there's a bunch of outcrop along the linc that'd be good for some bouldering, but there's the traffic. And finally niagra falls, starting from the maid of the mist dock and working my way up. That ones a no no for obvious reasons.

I've seen the stuff just past Espinola and it is quite nice. Last time I went past there I didn't have any gear whatsoever. So I didn't want to cause myself pain by going to look. On a side note to that the North of 45 website has some decent detail about some of the climbs around Espinola.

Inco takes there property pretty seriously. They have a full fleet of rent-a-cops patroling it constantly. It's just not worth the risk. We should have thought of it a couple of years ago when we were under 18.

Maybe next time your up that way you can make some friends with the rentacops, or with inco people or something. Lots of cool places are shut down, for what? Liability reasons? Health and Safety? Phah! You can get hurt breathing, let alone anything else.

c_plante: Tell you what in the spring we'll do a road trip up north. We'll keep to places that are somewhat legal.

For those of you familiar with this route: The highway between Sudbury and Manitoulin Island have some excellent looking rock on the side of the road. Except for that fact that they're too close to the road and that there's no room for cams or a good place for a top rope I would do them. There are also some really good boulders on that route aswell, some really rad ones too!

c_plante: I think if we do this road trip I have a hankering to go really north so we'll hit Sudbury and Espinola but I really want to head out to Thunder Bay as well. But, then again this roadtrip may have to face the reality check of time vs. when I have to get back to work. I think they should insitute some sort of climbers maternatly leave when the weather gets good. Oh well, one day when I run this provence...

We can follow highway 6 and hit lions head and then climb tobermory, and the flower pots, and then take the fairy and take highway 6 all the way up to... uh, that highway that goes into the back end of sudbury, and then climb around sudbury, sound fun?

Sounds good. There are a few nice things on Manitouland Island I want to try when we're there.

I just want to climb some flowerpots and see if we can scoot the conservation authority, they really don't like it when people climb those things. Unless they've lifted the ban.

Well the answer should be obvious downshift, because it's there. And I can't wait to make that phonecall to your parents to ask for bail... That would be soo sweet.
