Hmm I always have trouble figuring out where the best place to post things is, so hopefully this is kind of the right place. Alrighty I've finally booked my flights and I'm flying in to Los Angeles on the 11th September and flying out on the 16th October and looking to go climbing in those 5 weeks. I'm travelling by myself and uncertain yet whether I'll be carrying a lot of gear (I'll be coming from Africa). The places I had in mind were Smith Rocks, Moab/Indian Creek, Bishop and Red Rocks. Do you reckon that would be too much to try and crowd into the five weeks that I have? especially considering I have to get to these places by public transport/hitching. Am I better off just going to a few of the places? My knowledge of US geography and transport is fairly poor so if I was going to go to all these areas, does anyone have a suggestion as to the best order to go also taking into account weather? Also any general tips would be appreciated Thanks for any help ps is red rocks too hot in Sep/Oct?

If your concerned with crowding to much in, you should skip Smith and stay around the California area. Smith is a long way from Red rocks, Bishop area. The California area is so diverse and amazing in everyway you could easily spend 5 weeks there. Try and make some connections with people over the internet before you get here. Red rocks will be hot in September, but you can find shady canyons aplenty to climb in, especially getting toward October. Although your not going to want to stay in the campground when it's hot, that place is kinda a barren wasteland Have a nice trip

for that time, without a car, Smith will eat up about 2 weeks. And you'll only get to climb there a few days. Bishop, J-tree, Red Rocks would be a pretty good circuit. Moab would be OK, but would require a car or ridesharing. Sadly the US isn't as backpacker travel friendly as Aus. Your BEST bet is to find someone willing to roadtrip at the same time with a car. Finding partners at crags and hitching will severely cut down your climbing time. If you can't do that, at least try to find people on here that live near the areas you want to visit and try to arrange climbing days with them.
