Perhaps this has been discussed here before, but in light of the highly publicized completion of the seven summits by blind mountaineer Erik Weihenmayer (who climbed Kosciusko, by the way, not Carstensz Pyramid), I'm kind of curious to hear people's opinions about which they think should be considered the seventh summit, and why.

I guess technically Carstenz is in Asia (since Indonesia decided to annexe the western half of New Guinea), so arguably doesn't count. The fact that Kosie is a piece of piss and Carstenz an expensive expedition surely has nothing to do with it...

I belong to the camp that the continent of "Australia" should be considered "Australia-Oceana," and there for beleive that Carstensz Pyramid is the "real" summit in this case. I'm surprised that a climber like Weihenmayer doesn't make this distinction, it seems to me that the general consensus of the seven summits includes Carstensz. But then again, the first seven-summiter, Dick Bass, hiked Kosciusko and thus setting the trend. The next guy to do the seven, Patrick Morrow, did Carstensz. If he had beaten Bass I'm sure there would be no question about the highest peak in Autralia-Oceana.

But Carstensz or not, the seven summits is an impressive feat and Weihenmayer definately has my upmost respect; doing the Austrailian seven without sight is a great accomplishment.

Actually, Eric does know the difference...he's planning to climb Carstenz next year according to the ABCnews.com story that I read.

Did anyone notice that the news article mentioned above said "seven continents" then went on to say "...the summit of the world's seven highest peaks?" I don't keep up on summit bagging but is that way wrong? I does not detract from his accomplishment and I only ask to make sure I didn't misunderstand something. Doing any of it is impressive enough given his situation.

Yeah, the seven highest peaks are much different than the seven summits, only everest is common between them.

The article is definately written by a non-climber, it also says El Cap is the highest exposed rock face in the world.

Looking at this scientifically/geographically, and not politically, I would have to say that Cartenz Pyramid *is* one of the seven summits. Reason being is that the island of New Guinea is part of the oceanic continent. Although geographists around the world constantly argue whether or not that is an actual continent, I would have to say it is based on the plates in which it is located on. However to end the debate this guy should climb both, you know, just to make sure.

How about the climber just saves his money and climbs other stuff? I mean, to pay ANI $25k (no other way short of getting a boat) to freeze your balls off in Antartica... for what???
The Seven Summits is a guiding company's marketing dream come true. This is the heart of the Kartensz vs. Australia-walk-up debate.

"Seven Summits" my ass!

How anyone could exclude Carstenz Pyramid from the list is beyond me!

But of course, Dick Bass did it in his alleged "seven summits" tick list.

Now, you Merricans, do you know who climbed the real "Seven Summits" first?

[HINT:]

Think "Hoser"

Just a little tidbit of trivia for yall to munch about Kosciousko. It used to have a road that went all the way to the top. Smatter fact my uncle has driven to the top. So if he were to complete the rest of the highest peaks on each continent (including Carsenz Pyramid sheesh) does his ascent of Kosci still count.
