John Long's How to Rock Climb and How to Set Anchors (or something like that) are both good books to read

Beginning Rockcraft& Advanced Rockcraft by Royal Robins. Even I was able to understand and learn quite alot. Those two books were my climbing bible for years. Climbing in North America by Chris Jones provided alot of information and inspiration too.

I am currently reading "How to climb 5.12" and am finding it incredibly informative. Granted, it is geared toward moderate climbers looking to push their climbing to the next level, i.e. 5.12 and beyond.
Having said that, the physical training tips and metal preparation advice found within I believe to be very helpful to climbers of all skill levels.

Not the first book a beginner should read, but a definite must-read and must-have in your library.

all these mentioned books are good. my recomdation is to just go out with a patient, experienced climber. hands-on experience is the best way to pick things up quickly!

I have an awesome beginners book called "Rock Climbing, A Trail Side Guide" by Don Mellor. It's great!! It tells you all of the basic fundamentals of climbing!!

John Longs 3rd Edition. It's great, I have read it from cover to cover 3 or 4 times now and go back to specific areas after almost every weekend climb. Each time I find something new or something I didn't understand that I worked on and then figured it out.

I agree that "Mountaineering, freedom..." is a must-read for any beginner. It stresses the safety and prudence that every climber should know.
