It doesn't look like there's too much activity around here, but I'm desperate! I'll be moving up to Cooperstown, NY in a week and I need to know where the climbing is. I see Little Falls is about an hour away, and Nine Boulders might be a option too. Anyone up there have any recent info? Care to hook up and show me around?

Good luck. I went to Oneonta State and basically gave up climbing for a few years and worked on my drinking instead. There are some cool boulders above Hartwick College though. There is great climbing within a few hours (Daks, Gunks) but in my experience not much local rock. That said I didn't explore much.

I'm graduating from Oneonta State on the 19th and moving to the Gunks 5 days later. bkalaska pretty much nailed it..climbing takes a backseat to drinking around these parts. Cooperstown does have a "gym" at the Clark Sport Center. It's one of those simulated rock walls in their pool room..humid and beyond greasy..it sucks. During the winter months our crew from Oneonta would go to Electric City near Albany or Colgate College. The good news is you'll be just under an hour from Little Falls and maybe 1:40 from Nine Corners. If you're new to climbing, Little Falls is a great place for beginners. Lots of easy TR set-ups and great bouldering.

Hey Man, this may brighten up your hopes! I think Clark Sports Center has a climbing gym. Also, just over the hill in Hamilton is a gym, and maybe 45 miinutes away in electric city gym in Schenectady - also as someone else mentions, Coop is 50/50 between ADX and CATz! Im over the hill from Cooperstown too, there is some really sick hiking along the FLT(Finger Lake Trails) as well. Oneonta has some attractions too, they mostly come from downstate and can be found falling down drunk and wanting you on Thursday-Tuesday nights. Update - here is more information: http://www.clarksportscenter.com/...e/Group_Programs.php scroll down for rock climbing

I love Cooperstown!! When I was younger, I use to go up at least once a year for the Baseball Hall of Fame game and induction. As far as climbing goes though, I have no clue.

Thanks for the replies. It's true that Cooperstown is a great place, but for climbing... not so good. Motohero- I was just at the Clark Gym here in Cooperstown. The high climb wall is closed for the summer. They built it in the same room as the swimming pool! Humidity! They do have a "boulder wall", but it's a 7' high, 70 ft' traverse vertical wall with the feature cemented in place. That will get boring quick, especially without anyone to climb with. I'm going to check out the other gyms your mentioned and try to get up to Little Falls. Moto- if you're just over the hill, maybe we can go out climbing sometime. I need partners!

Cobleskill- Thanks for the reply. I've been in Cooperstown for two years now and I do climb with Jim. Actually we're going out tomorrow! For those that come to this post in the future... Little Falls is a heaven send. It's very close and you can go to Moss Island yourself and almost always find someone to climb with. With short cliffs, Moss Island is more like an outdoor climbing gym, but the people are great. Across the river there are plenty of good cliffs as well. Nine Corner Lake has great bouldering and just up the road the newly developed Lost T crag and Lost Hunters have good sport and trad options.

You're better off climbing a bar stool at Ommegang Brewery. You should bring me a Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, or Stan Musial t-shirt when you come to the Gunks, I'll belay you all day for one of those. DL
