I've had a bad couple of days climbing this weekend (in my opinion, anyway) - I'm devoid of my ordinary energy and strength, and certainly stamina. And . . . coincidentally this happened around 'that time of the month.' So, looking back, it seems to be a regular and draining occurance. Aside from regular discomfort, do you ladies also experience lack of performance when menstruating? Or is it just in my head? Any solutions?

I've heard that it's fairly normal for women to experience slight energy losses, etc - around the time when they are menstruating - it has to do with your body having problems keeping up with the loss of blood (compared to an injury, etc - where generally the bloodloss is relatively small (unless it's a severe injury, in which case you also loose energy)). Less blood means your heart has to work harder to pump the existing blood around, in order to keep up with oxygen and sugar supply to the muscles. - d.

The main problem (at least for me) is loss of iron - no energy! Oh, and then there's the cramps, water weight/bloating; need I go on? Actually, if I eat more foods with iron just before and during my period, I don't notice any problems. My biggest gripe is what a pain it is to be a female out in nature sometimes! But that's another post altogether.

I personally don't have any energy loss, but I do know that my personlity changes a little (and no...not for the better) and I eat everything in site. If you are having energy loss, Kristin, it probably has more to do with your body working to adjust to all the hormones and changes rather than blood loss. But not for sure on that one. rock_diva is right...it could be iron loss as well. Try protein bars and energy foods like pasta (with seafood-iron)and PB & honey sandwichs (although not at the same time ). If that still doesn't help, your ob-gyn will probably have some more advice. I'm sure that what you are feeling is normal, though. oh...and Sauron?? Thanks for being a man and being mature about the topic! [ This Message was edited by: climberchic on 2002-04-14 23:59 ]

Oh man!!! I am waiting for a huge slew of humor thrown into this...thread. I myself, am having issues... I have only two words. Headaches! Exaustion. Each month, need two days of extra sleep. And I'll KNOW : because I get a bad headache. I'm about to start. I give into the fact, that I can't give my endurance, any extra pow...I am then resolved. I tend to want iron rich foods... molasses, is a good one for me... I use it regularily, when I am on my cycle. Mollasses Cookies, or on my oatmeal. Or just as a syrup...pancakes. I bruise easily, which is another iron deficiency... I'd talk to your OBGYN... I think this is SO NOT in your head. I usually get hit hard, with Cramps and Fatigue! Effects my climbing. And Mental Psyche also! Climbing is a lotta MENTAL! I'll usually take the days of my cycle, and just take the climbing, for what it is...a day climbing. Good or bad...mental or mensrual. Take care. Woah, not exactly the kind of thread I would have expected at midnight while listening to The Reverend Horton Heat. But on a more serious note: A cheerleader/track running girl I know told me she has the same problems with iron and cramps. She said she swears by Therma Care Heat Patches. They come three to a box, and last for like 10 hours. And as for the iron, she said she takes a supplement. I hope this helps If it doesn't maybe we men could organize a monthly "Take our heads out of our asses day"

Ok, so I go to bed last night!! Realized I forgot to point out what my OB told me when my cycles were taking the life outta me... Evening Primrose Oil...(caplets) Flax Seed Oil(caplets) I get mine at Trader Joes. Or local Health food markets. Makes for less PMS. Or PMDD!! She also recommended Acupuncture> I've done acupuncture in the past. I find it relaxing at that moment and time, rather than any help on the PMS and fatigue. T

Guess where I'm headed in a couple days?? Energy, no that's not an issue, I am rarely low on energy (to know me is to LOVE me in all my spastic glory! w00t! )Anyway... my body *does* get in a state that doesn't agree with the kind of movement I wanna be doing, though! (think high-stepping... ooh, ech. too much shifting around going on) My feet also get puffy (bloating...) and my climbing shoes become a nightmare! But this is pretty minor stuff, and I barrel past it. It's just not enough to keep me on the ground I'm with rock_diva, in that I keep my mess out of the woods because I just don't wanna go there , packing it out and looking for a discreet way/spot to deposit my body's "goods" ... and stay in the gym, where I climb like usual.

As a couple other posters have mentioned, I've found evening primrose oil to be a goddess-send. That and drinking lots and lots and lots of water. Cramps are much more (I started to say tolerable but that just ain't right) ... they don't suck as much. Sometimes, though, I swear I menstruate brain cells. Does anyone else get the monthly stupids?

I always plan my outdoor trips aroun "that time". Juliana is right...much more than a pain and downright gross. Has anyone ever used the Keeper menstrual cap? How do you like it? ~Erica

Heh, wow... I always thought the "keeper" was just a joke. *feels dumb* Yeah, I hate having to plan around it, buuutt... it sucks bigtime if you don't. Edit: It looks painful. [ This Message was edited by: juliana on 2002-09-18 18:56 ]

I have a couple of friends who use the Keeper and swear by it. They say it cuts down on cramps, it doesn't leak, and it's easy to work with. I haven't gotten around to trying it yet but I plan to. One of these days, when I work up the nerve.

I've used something simular, (kinda looks like a mix between a diaphram and a female condom) but inserted it wrong, and the ENTIRE contents ~squirm~ spilled out... Haven't touched the damn thing since... As far as menstrating in the woods, be VERY careful...the scent REALLY gets the attention of bears...

For me it's not the actual menstruating that's the problem, it's the flood of emotions that drives me insane. How many of you gals have found yourselves crying on a route for no apparent reason? I mean, I'm out here to have fun and I make one wrong move and have to reverse it and suddenly it feels like the biggest tragedy and I end up just starting to cry. I think my boyfriend has learned to deal with the emotional mess that I am for the two or three days preceding my visit from Aunt Flo. At first he was very concerned, but by now he realizes that he's got to deal with the fact that his climbing partner's a girl and I have these lapses in sanity

Every summer we head to Yosemite for 10 days or so and every time Adam schedules it just perfect!!! NOT!!! He always asks me " You want to do this five pitch climb??" I say "No Way, I need a bathroom kinda close". He says "Just stick 2 or 3 up there!!!!" I just like taking a hot shower and sometimes all you have is a river or a faucet!! Oh Well, we have survived this long!!!

You know I am so glad I read this forum...because that just happened to me this week and I had no idea why my performance was so lacking compared to last week. At least now I know I am not doing anything wrong to cause my performace level to go down!

In reply to: Sometimes, though, I swear I menstruate brain cells. Does anyone else get the monthly stupids? oh yeah, for sure! I also lose huge amounts of coordination! I get super klutzy and trip and drop things all the time (hmmmm, that shin smashing fall on the trail this weekend suddenly explained). Lack of energy & climbing ability? Check lack of brain power? check lack of muscular coordination? check need to eat every chocolatey or salty thing in sight? check geez, gotta love this menstruation deal :x
