What is your favorite dog breed for cragging? I LOVE my Siberian husky. She is super friendly to everyone and loves other dogs. She loves hiking and loves outdoor.

I thought husky's loved to run and wander, high energy animals....you may love your dog (and she's probobly beautiful), but would that really be a good breed for a crag dog?

They do like to wander, and they redefine "high energy", but can be trained to come when called. Just takes longer than many other breeds. Rule #2 of dog training: You must be more stubborn than the dog.

And besides, at the crag, the dog should be on a leash, tied up.

The one that isn't there.

Don't get me wrong - I love dogs. I grew up with dogs. I especially like Labrador Retrievers and various types of herders.

However, most owners don't train their dogs effectively, if at all - and, it's just wrong to have a dog tied up at the bottom of a multipitch climb.

This guy was pretty cool. A bit older, very chill. Literally didn't do anything but lay in the sun at the bottom of the climb. Now, granted, this was single-pitch sport.

I don't think its responsible to take a dog out climbing for much more than single pitch stuff. Older dogs seem to make much better crag dogs as they seem happy just to lay in the sun for hours.

Bullmastiff of course!

Likes exersie, but is relatively low energy. Loves laing down on you pack in the sun or the Shade (bonus of protecting your gear Laugh), friendly with other dogs and people, quite, did I mention they tend to just laze around when your not walking them...

my husky has high energy at the crag - that is after we switched her to a venison and high raw food diet. my blue heeler is good too - and he can do tricks while the husky looks on in disdain.

LOL.... my husky had a run-in with one of them ankle-biter yappy dogs (Pomeranian, I think.) Yappy dog started up a storm, telling Ivan what-for. Ivan glances at the thing with a look of "Bitch, please. My bowel movements are bigger than you," and walked on.

My next will probably be a Aussie Cattle Dog (Queensland Heeler). A friend is a breeder and trainer and her dogs are among the most loyal, intelligent and well behaved pups I have ever met. Absolutely sweet and playful when it's time and completely obedient when you need them to be.

I probably will not take them to the crag much....but then, lately I haven't been hauling my ass out much, either.

less medical problems and in most of my experiences more intelligence.

I grew up with toy collies, and I liked them a lot. They are reputed to be one of the smarter breeds. Only one of the shelties was smarter then the mutts I have exposure to.

I guess I am also partial to mutts because you will most likely be going to a shelter to get one. I admit that you are playing a gambling game with their previous owner experiences and heritage.

Any dog with a "beta" temperament - not easily freaked (gamma) and not aggressive (alpha). Easily trainable and that is what my new puppy (Bailey) is.

Golden Retrievers are my favorite breed. They love people and generally listen well if you take the time to train them.

In terms of crag dogs, none. Take them hiking, biking, camping, whatever. Crags aren't the place for dogs IMO.
