Jack's over July 4th  (North_America: United_States: Arizona: Northern: Jacks_Canyon)

I was out at Jack's last fall and had a blast - not too hot, not too cold. How would it be over July 4th? Is there enough shade chasing to make a long weekend worth the trip from Tucson? Thanks!

My prediction: Painfully hot! Latest I've been there was the first week of June. Too hot then except for dawn patrols, by 11A we were cooked. Try Flag instead - or better yet, your backyard: Mt. Lemmon.

It's reassurring to me when people make assumptions like this. The best time to climb most places in the west is the offseason. You have the place to yourself and you don't have to deal with the TR crowd and poorly behaved dogs. With a little forethought one can find great climbing at Jack's (or any crag for that matter) during the most improbable times. I just returned from a trip to Indian Creek in mid-June. Had one of my best trips ever for both onsights and redpoints and only saw two other parties in a weeks time. While you and the rest of the flock line up 4-deep to climb Mr. Slate, I had one of the finest crags in the world to myself. Yeah everyone should take your advice to climb in Flag.

Whoa, crackmd! Put away the flamethrower! All I remember of Jack's in the summer was how HOT it was. While you're out there climbing in the desert, chasing shade, I'll be up in the mountains in the cool pines. Enjoy yourself.

Well its all about having a plan for the day based on then sun for good climbing. We climb with headlamps and after the sun sets. Want the whole place to yourself? Thats the way to go even if its crowded.
