No more DWS at Summersville, WV?

I just saw this today:
http://www.lrh.usace.army.mil/Announcements/index.cfm?id=11856&pge_prg_id=7732

Which is a press release saying cliff diving/jumping is now banned at a number of Army Corps of Engineer lakes, including Summersville.

Does this effectively ban DWS as well? I figure I will give the number listed in that link a call during the week, but does anyone else have any more information?

Thanks.

It doesn't say anything about climbing, bouldering, or water bouldering, so I am still going to do it. Of course I will maintain a low profile to avoid potential problems anyway. Just don't top out and jump off anything. If you fall when you are climbing, that is something that occurs at Summersville all the time, and climbing is not banned. And frankly, is there anyone there to stop you? I read it as jumping is banned, but not falling.

And if you post any photos of you flying off a cliff, be sure it is dated before 2007.

Well, I called the information number today, and their description of what is illegal to do is that you "cannot enter the water from a height greater than your own".

It apparently doesn't matter if you are literally at the top of the cliff or not, so DWS seems dicey under these situations.

I'm really glad the 69 'water related deaths' since 1993 warrant such a law.

Is this sarcasm?

yeah it is. They give no information for how many deaths were caused by cliff jumping, they just say water related. I'd imagine the majority of those deaths involve people that are on boats and are too drunk to swim.

The fact that they use it as a reason is pretty weak.

Well if they don't post any signs, can't you plead ignorance? Even if they do put signs at the top of the cliffs, climbers can't see them.

Its better that we don't threaten access.

Doing something "under the radar" or "illegal" will only provoke further repurcussions and likely restrict access completely.

Here is the deal...I work for an engineering firm in WV and have talked to the public information director for this region. If you enter the water from a height greater than that of your own body (if you are 6ft tall it would be 6 feet) YOU WILL BE FINED $5,000.00!!!!!! This means no clif diving, no DWS no climbing unless it is on toprope. The act will be in effect for at least three years as that is the term of the new commander. ACOE has 4 full time staff there and will be handin out fines with the help of DNR....Sorry dude...we are all FUNKED!!!!!

A friend of mine who works near there says they've put signs all over the place. The rangers (?) have been hiding in the bushes and issuing $500 tickets to people. He said most of the tickets have been issued in areas mostly used for diving/swimming and not where the better DWS is located.
