http://www.adventuresportscenter.com Info On the Site? "The ASCI Showdown and Invitational, held Saturday, June 30th, features premier level competition in two exciting adventure sports disciplines: rock climbing and freestyle kayaking. In addition to competition between invited top-ranked athletes, the "Showdown" allows recreational climbers and paddlers a shot at the big league. The rock and water theme, combined with a festival atmosphere, showcases two different sports to potentially diverse audiences. The competition brings to ASCI 30 of the best Male and Female competition climbers in the world and 15 of the nation's top freestyle kayakers. Join us on top of the mountain on June 30th for the most exciting Showdown of the summer!" Does anyone know anything about this comp? All I can figure out is that its at a new adventure facility in western maryland (not known for good climbing, especially in the summer months) Is it an indoor comp? Bouldering or Sport? The website is pretty useless for times and other seemingly important info. The Reason I ask is because this place is about a 20 min drive from my house and if "30 of the best male and female climbers in the country" are going to be there then I might have to go check it out. However I can't Imagine who would want to climb in Western Maryland in June!?! Another Bit from the website: FORK RUN RECREATION AREA FACTS Fork Run Climbing Area * Friction Addiction is over 30 feet high. Aleady free climbed by world class climbers Lynn Hill and Will Gadd, FA offers a wild array of boulder problems and beginner top roped ascents. * Boulder 360 is a rhododendron capped V0-V8 boulder with a complete 360 degree traverse. * The Ledges are a series of 50-60 foot vertical walls, portions overhanging, with multiple sport routes. Composition: Quartzite conglomerate; intermixed sandstone Integrity: Sturdy and clean Routes: 8-10 developed sport routes Difficultly: Beginner (5.4 - 5.8) to Advanced (5.11 - 5.12) All private climbing must sign-in at the Fork Run kiosk and sign a waiver before getting on the rocks. So if its outside?! your telling me that they are bringing pro climbers in to to climb V8 and 5.12 routes? So any input on this will be helpfull

here is the email responce i recieved from Jesse Shimrock of ASCI: "Richard, The event actually has been advertised. It is mentioned in our brochures distribution of over 250,000. We mention it in radio ads. A full page event ad was in this months issue of Rock and Ice. NE2C (New England Climbing Consultants) have sent blasts and posters out to a ton of shops and reps on the east coast. AS you may or may not know, our whitewater course opened to the public this past weekend. Much of our marketing dollars and efforts have been focused towards that naturally. The strong push for this event has just begun. I am not familiar with your organization or rc.com but I would love to learn more and any help that you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. You can reach me at or at the office. I will be out and about today but would like to hear from you soon. Below is a blurb that you can use about the event. I look forward to speaking with you. ASCI Showdown The ASCI Showdown and Invitational, held Saturday, June 30th, features premier level competition in two exciting adventure sports diciplines, rock climbing and freestyle kayaking. In addition to competition between invited top ranked athletes, the "showdown" allows recreational climbers and paddlers a shot at the big league. The rock and water theme, combined with a festival atmosphere, showcases two different sports to potentially diverse audiences. The competition athletes will consist of 30 of the best Male and Female competition climbers in the world and 15 of the nations top freestyle kayakers. Join us on top of the mountain on June 30th for the most exciting showdown of the summer! I am sure he would prefer his cell phone be removed from your post. Maybe you can edit the post for him. You still are providing the work number he can be reached at.

Notice in the email that nothing was said of Who these 30 best climbers in the country are, or what type of comp it is. I sort of get the feeling that its an event organized by people who know nothing about the sport. Furthermore considering that this adventure facility is located at the top of a snooty ski resort, i highly doubt that they are very interested in catering to the "dirt bag" climbing community. This more sounds like a place that weekend warriors with too much money can go claw around on a choss pile so they can feel good about themselves. (sorry to be the one to rain on the ASCI parade) I did see the advert in Rock and Ice BTW. Maybe Im wrong about my assumptions (and i hope i am) and i will be the first to say that it would be cool to actually get a big event in my little local area....if done for the climbers not for the money.

BTW, Lynn Hill was a speaker at the local Community College this winter. So I am guessing they asked her to be in some adds for the adventure center. I would like to know what Lynn thinks of the operation.

some clarification on that issue from jesse shimrock: "this is a bouldering comp so the event organizers will be bringing in the competitive bouldering wall. We have amazing natural rock faces as well which you can see by the pictures with lynn hill as she was here working with our local Adventure Sports College Students. We did not pay her to come take photos as others have assumed. We work with Garrett College's Adventure Sports Institute to provide a World Class location for their students to train and learn." some of the climbers are jason kehl, lizzy asher, grady bagwell, natasha barnes, ryan banister, kara caputo to name a few.

Does anyone know if there will be a citizen's comp, like at ABS Nationals, or do only the invited climbers actually get to climb?

Here's a bit more info from newenglandbouldering.com thread (quoting new yorker): " NE2C invites you all to sit back in a comfortable chair, close your eyes, imagine the rumbling baritone of the mini me's sehksy voice. we ask you to remember the gravity brawl, the heretofore pinnacle of competition climbing. now imagine the grand opening of a magical wonderland: a brand new whitewater rafting course on top of a ski mountain, mountain biking, a new crag, bright sun shining and women in bathing suits. now, the biggest conceptual leap of all, if you need to take a quick break, get a stiff drink, we understand..... imagine the 30 best climbers in the country competing on a triple wide (45 motherfvcking feet) pyramide thunderdome. imagine thousands of spectators and the sickest climbing comp anyone's ever seen (until NE2C takes over the outdoor retailer show in august). mention the neb at the door and admission is $5 (you don't actually have to mention neb, but seriously, this whole shabang is $5). saturday june 30th. McHenry Maryland. trail day, raffle, and climbing at cooper's rock on sunday. $5
