We met him in person in Acadia and he seemed very self-important and a little creepy. He acted like he was going to jump in front of us if we weren't going to lead this climb. Then he told me that he was standing behind me the whole time I was belaying my husband. He seemed really proud of that and said 'You didn't even know that I was right there behind you'. As if he were some stealth ninja or something.

Ken Nichols is a bastion of traditional climbing in a sport that is being "dumbed" down. Not just by bolts but by people who have little value for the climbing that was done in the past and realizing that some climbs should be left for another day.

There is some validity in drawing attention to and trying to preserve traditional ethics in this era that is indeed moving in a dumb downed direction. Never the less when Ken vandalizes purely sport areas that never had much of a trad ethic - purely with vindictive and punative intent - he is defeating his purpose. Far better to lead by example - put up routes ground up without altering the rock and let the whining focus on whether or not to retro bolt so that we don't have our routes "dictated by a mad man" (that pansy, Fracture's lament) - then he would get some support.

hmm maybe rob should amend those trespassing orders to included NE dan who's drinking the kool aid not all routes take gear ya dumbass "another day" was when it was bolted and able to be climbed. as discussed on another board.. Farley's ethics are to only have bolts where gear cannot be placed.. there seems to be a ton of mixed routes that have a mixture of both.. among a lot of trad only too. Don't see Ken heading down to the gunks to smash over the bolt on Arrow or something.. he's too chicken shit to pull that off

Akin to Ken N., a shining example of the ethical climber.

Wow, so he's still around. Nichols is a man on a mission, and he believes he's got it all figured out. I remember several years ago he removed an old piton from a climb on Main Cliff (IIRC) in Ragged Mountain and loosened a big block in the process, thus making the climb even more dangerous.

There is basically no fixed pro in CT. On any cliff besides Ragged Mtn, which is owned by climbers, you could in theory use pins and just remove them if you needed, say a thin lost arrow or knife blade for a face. Imagine that, Ken's relentless drive against bolts could backfire if people stated placing and removing pins! I do like his drive against bolts though. With the nature of CT Traprock, you could punch lines of bolts five feet apart and create hundreds of contrived routes.

First off I would like to say that I do agree to an extent that bolts aren't good for certain areas. In some cases, like face climbs that would otherwise not be climbable or anchors where there is not avaiable protection. Bolting near obvious cracks or if a route is run out is just plain wrong. On a different note, bolts do exist in CT. I've seen them and they are solid. No, I will not reveal there location. Later, Sean
