I know I should post this in the Summersville route part, but I need to get some responses quickly, say within an hour or two.... I am headed down to Summersville for the first time in over a year and my partner can't go. I figured I'd just go try the deep water soloing. I hadn't planned on anything too crazy. Just swin around, climb up until I was high enough, then jump down. Now, I just did a search online and I'm seeing articles saying that it is now ILLEGAL to deep water solo or even jump off the rocks at Summersville now. The article said it just went inot effect on May 31st. Has anyone heard of this? I have three damn hours left at my desk before I can figure out when to drive therew from Cleveland. I have my first week off in over three years and I was excited, but now I'm concerned. Anyone heard of this new ban?

Yeah I just saw word of that ban too. I don't think much will happen in the realm of DWS, I mean I doubt the Corps is going to have patrol boats out writing people tickets for climbing.

I think the ban is more directed towards drunks jumping off cliffs in heavy traffic areas like Pirate's Cove. That's my take anyway. I surely plan on doing some Summersillve DWS this summer until I hear about someone actually getting in trouble for it.

Anyhoo good luck man, hope you find some partners down here.

That's kind of a drag.

Anyone know the water levels down there right now and some spots to recommend? I've only been to the main area around Mutiny and am wondering where else to go if the water is too low there.

Thanks!!

Heh, I love the "I am a cool climber so any bans don't really apply to me" bullshit.

Oh the bans still apply. And if they catch me I'll take what's coming.

I'm with Wes, its only a matter of time and a climber is going to get pegged with cliff jumping. The question from there is what is going to happen after that? From the looks of it when I was up there the ban is getting ignored pretty heavily, granted I have no idea how many people were jumping before the ban.

I was at the Lake with friends this weekend and there were at least a couple dozen people jumping off around Pirate's Cove...so far looks like zero enforcement, as I expected there would be.

Unless everything is wrong that my Socialist High School English teacher taught me about worshiping Thoreau... CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE IS COOL! Cool

(Except for misbehaving and disobeying the english teacher of course)

Hah! Take that authority!

(I'm not really sure if these really apply to this, but espousing Thoreau is known to make one cool and defiant!) Tongue

Here is the deal...I work for an engineering firm in WV and have talked to the public information director for this region. If you enter the water from a height greater than that of your own body (if you are 6ft tall it would be 6 feet) YOU WILL BE FINED $5,000.00!!!!!! This means no clif diving, no DWS no climbing unless it is on toprope. The act will be in effect for at least three years as that is the term of the new commander. ACOE has 4 full time staff there and will be handin out fines with the help of DNR....Sorry dude...we are all FUNKED!!!!!

No news yet. It seems like people are getting fined. Climbers that are getting away with climbing are keeping hush-hush to keep volume of climbers down. Maybe what we need is some loud-mouthed New Yorkers down here "fallin in da wader" to test the enforcement/ban!!! If my wife reads this I love NY/NJ baby...you know this!Pirate

I have yet to hear of a single person getting fined. And in fact, anecdotal evidence seems to point to this:

Word is that DNR police (who enforce rules on the lake, not the Army Corp) are laughing off questions from climbers, as though they don't take it very seriously.

Please don't take that as the final word, however. I suppose the prudent approach would be not to DWS until we get some official word on the rule's interpretation.

I just spoke with my contact @ The Army Corps Of Engineers. She said that she can't release info on how many fines/citations have been issued. My personal feeling from dealing with the corps for years is that this ban is standard ACOE ass-covering. So if you get hurt or some drunk does, the ACOE can say "We told you so". The worst thing about this ban is that it is unprecedented. This region of ACOE is the first to issue such a ban, it opens the door for other regions to do similar bans. Other area's may have DNR officers who do take them seriously. Let's face it...it's the drunk cliff divers that caused this ban...not climbers....ACOE & DNR know this and hopefully will limit their persecution to deuschbags.
