Can anyone recommend a non-vinyl / non-PVC air mattress? We're looking for something that will fit in a 2-person tent without having to suffer through that new-shower-curtain-smell. Anyone know of any manufacturers? Thanks!

Big Agnes mats are great. I just purchased my second one and they don't smell when they come out of the box. They are made with a nylon fabric with an internal polyurethane coating, so no vinyl or pvc.

Thanks! I had read that review and may consider buying one of those. However, I think for right now I unfortunately need something a little more cushy and mattress-like. I sleep on two pads right now and my old lady bones don't like it!

All the stuff that I see offered is PVC. In the end, if I can't find a non-PVC mattress then I will definately go with big agnes.

As far as packable matresses go, you can't get much thicker and confortable then the Big Agnes. Good luck!!

Don't give up too easily. About 4 years ago I bought a heavy duty, thick car camping air mattres from Kirkham's here in SLC for about $20 that didn't smell plasticy at all (that smell makes me sick), even though that's what it was made of. It has fuzzy stuff on the top so you don't slide around, and isn't even bad to just sleep on directly with a light blanket on a warm night. It doesn't have a brand name on it, and I threw away the box long ago, so I'm not much help, except to say such a thing does exist.
Kirkham's is pretty service oriented, sells lines like Marmot and Western Mountaineering, not junk; maybe they would mail you one if you strike out locally. 801-486-4161.
I've no connection with the company, other than they have always treated me well there.

Wait, did you mean for backpacking? The one I was talking about is too big for that. You aren't over inflating the two pads you have, are you? Your hips should just barely touch, or almost touch, the ground.
Thermarest makes 4" thick pads, too, that are on the heavy side for backpacking, but if that's what you need to sleep well, and go light everywhere else, you might get away with it.

Thanks for the info! Yes, I am actually looking for an inflatable mattress for car camping, so I will look into your lead. Thanks so much!

Check out the ECO Thermo Pads from Pacific Outdoor:

I haven't seen one in person, but Backpacking mag recently gave it a "green" award. No PVC. Made from bamboo cellulose.
