so there is this little insert my wife got in a magazine or paper or something called "Detour: Rockclimbing" and it is from the Saturn car company. it is supposed to tell you how to take up climbing. here are some of my favorite quotes and my response... "every inch of your body will be tightened and toned in this extreme adventure workout" hmm, really? sounds like some crazy wilderness pilates. "physically, you'll feel every muscle grow while mentally you'll conquer all of your fears and work out any stress you may have had. leave it at the mountain." some climbers i know seem to take out their stress on the message board. while talking about balance..."leaning back is never a good idea." i'll remember that next time i am on something steep. why you need a helmet..."remember, you'll be swinging back and forth when you start out" what the heck are they talking about? on the topic of shoes..."don't get anything too heavy" what kind of shoes are they looking at? i am getting confused. here is the best. is shows a photo of some alpine talus pile and says..."El Capitan is the perfect setting for beginners because the ascent is more of a hike than a climb." are you serious? it seemed pretty dern hard to me. i guess i just suck.

lancebrock wrote: why you need a helmet..."remember, you'll be swinging back and forth when you start out" So I should wear a helmet on a swing set?
lancebrock wrote: on the topic of shoes..."don't get anything too heavy" ie. the mafia is not the best place to pick up climbing shoes, cement isn't as good as rubber.

HURR HURR HURR!!! *seizes up* I have that issue of Women's Health. I knew it would make its way here. Here are my favorites among your favorites. RAAAHHHH!!!!
In reply to: "every inch of your body will be tightened and toned in this extreme adventure workout" hmm, really? sounds like some crazy wilderness pilates. How is this inaccurate? I've always been skinny but now I'm teh skinny-buff (I haven't had to have all my shirts re-tailored though, guess I'm not trying hard enough). And hard, gymnastic routes CAN be like "crazy wilderness pilates."
In reply to: while talking about balance..."leaning back is never a good idea." i'll remember that next time i am on something steep. Depends. I have had plenty of sends dashed because I didn't pull in my hips or shoulders.
In reply to: why you need a helmet..."remember, you'll be swinging back and forth when you start out" what the heck are they talking about? Never seen a n00b go all Cirque de Soleil while toproping way off the plumb line? I see that pretty regularly. I've done it and so have you.
In reply to: on the topic of shoes..."don't get anything too heavy" what kind of shoes are they looking at? i am getting confused. Probably those already-clunky Spires weighed down with Lysol and foot spooge. Use of those horseshoes in a crag wobbler could constitute agg assault.
In reply to: "physically, you'll feel every muscle grow while mentally you'll conquer all of your fears and work out any stress you may have had. leave it at the mountain." some climbers i know seem to take out their stress on the message board. Well, I can say I feel more chill after a lat-burning traverse than I do whanging my head onto my desk while reading about where I should be anchored while belaying and such. But do you REALLY think this is going to affect climbing and take a chunk out of its radness? Will hordes flock to your favorite roadcut after seeing a cheesecake brochure in Shape or Women's Health? And if they do, and they take those mags seriously, then why would you complain? Maybe we should be focusing our energies on that one Propel commercial where the chick climbs a giant water bottle, or those heinous frat girls who wear Denali jackets to class. zomg! EDIT: cottdam quote boxes. Oh, and OP, you seem like a strong, experienced guy. Why would you honestly care? These kinds of threads are usually for greenhorns to come bemoan in. Oh, and for me to squeal and giggle and revel in my own self-satisfactory snark

hey Hillary! lol I'm glad I have a few fans around here! I've been pretty busy climbing actually. I have a torn acl so I've been doing physical therapy for that and when I'm free I'm climbing! I try to make it to the crag at least twice a week wich is really good to have a full time job, a part time job, and a full time g/f on top of that! Anything new on your side of the crag?

In the YOUTUBE video I'll show phony clips of me displaying cams & nuts to the mallgoers, but their reactions (through "TV Magic") will actually be to DEEZ nutz: "Put that shit away." "I think I saw Big Foot's dick!" "The goggles do nussing." And then we'll revel in our glory, Majid. We will revel because we will have proved a point. edit: corrected for grammar

You remember that time you popped that little kids balloon at the carnival, then stole his candy as he ran back to his mom crying. That was funny.

Speaking of stupid questions.... I worked at a ski resort for a while and had to take a couple gondolas everyday to get to work... I've had some stupid questions asked. My favorite: "Where do you guys keep the moguls in the summer?"
