Spraypaint on ballistic nylon?

No, I am not spraypainting soft goods.

Here's the score: I got a Camelbak Blowfish hydration pack recently for wearing on longer trad routes. Plenty of agua, and enough storage space for lunch, emergency kit, and my approach shoes.

Only problem is, it's black, and here in North Cackalacky, that'll miff things up a bit. It's gonna soak up sun rays, and before I know it, the water's boiled off half way up the first pitch.

So, I was thinking about spraypainting (or other method - I'm open to siggestions) it a lighter color, e.g. tan, light gray, etc. in order to combat this problem. Only issue is, I don't know how the fabric does with spraypaint - I'd rather not have the pack come apart at the seams, or have paint solvents slowly drizziling into my H2O reservoir.

Anyone out there got any knowledge/experience?

The millitary reguarly paints (spray, latex, whatever) the bottoms of their standard green duffel bags tan. In three years of use it has never come off mine however it does make the nylon pretty stiff.

camelback, lunch, emergency kit and shoes. Sounds like you wont be opening it too much during the climb. How about making a white cover for the backpack? You know those rain covers? like those, but they are big, make one to fit your pack and maybe stitch the cover to it so the cover doesn't fly down the wall.

if you are still thinking on painting it, go to a dry cleaner/cloth dyer next to your place and ask about the best method to do so. Maybe bleach it, but might not work and weaken the nylon... you don;t wanna lose your lunch half way up, right?

Like poedoe mentioned, the military paints a lot of nylon. with so much activity inthe desert, lots of people are spraying down their OD, camo or black stuck tan or brown.

krylon fusion (made for painting plastic) works pretty well. just keep in mind that some WILL flake off.

Bleach will degrade the fabric.

Spray in thin coats, this will make it easiar for any solvent to evaporate from the fabric before it can have an adverse effect. Solvents can swell, soften and melt the polymer in the fabric, causing the individual fibers to combine into a single mass that appears to be harder and less flexible after the solvent evaporates. Solvent compositions vary by product and region because of local AQMD VOC rules, so I recomend you pick a small patch on the pack to test first as some solvents are more agressive.

They might even have a suggested method of changing the color.

Or just exchange it for one of a lighter color :)

Or cover it with foil. And while your at it, cover all your gear and your partner's gear with foil. Then everything will stay cool, and you can film a low budget sci-fi movie on the approach.

I actually spray painted a dark pair of shoes one time and they didn't seem to disintegrate from it.

My girlie solution would be to sew a light colored bag or cover for it, but the foil will look sooo much cooler. Be sure to accesorize with the anti-radio wave hat though.

camleback actually makes them in alot of colors so what about just buying another one? They are issuing them to us in the Army and mine is then new army ACU camo. the lighter colors help keep out heat but i have to remind you... as my drill sergeants used to say.. just because the water is hot doesn't mean it isn't going to hydrate you.

Don't worry about it. It will be fine. AKC's Krylon is pretty much standard, but there are some hard to find spray paints with stuff like low IR and super flexible binders to use on fabrics...

That's my technical opinion as a manufacturer of backpacks...
