There is already a Parkour technique for running up a hallway's walls by jumping from wall to wall and gaining a little each time. Just think about being able to run up some huge chimney. Yee Haw

Yes we do have names for all the stuff. When you run up bouncing between two walls like was mentioned, it's called tic-tacking. There are names for just about everything you'll see a true traceur do. The problem is these days there are two branches, parkour, and free running. Parkour is about smooth motion and overcoming obstacles with the least energy spent. Free running is similar but is more about aesthetics, so they'll do stuff like throw in extra spins just because they think it looks cool.

You're never really popular until you get ripped on regularly in an online forum. But yeah, Parkour is a great way to keep in shape between climbs, and most climbing techniques can be applied to it. Rob.

Whatever the right orthograph is, "parkours" could be compared with the - sometimes old - "circuits" that can be found in the Fontainebleau Forest. The "circuits" are a linking of up to 50-60 boulders of the same difficulty, whatever is is. To go from a boulder to another one, there's sometimes no other "official" possibility than to jump, or sometimes to downclimb boulders. Looking at experimented circuits boulderers, it can be pretty dynamic. So, if a "parkour" is not bouldering, placed in a historical perspective, a link could be found. But I suppose that "parkours" have some roots in gymnastics and assault courses or obstacle courses as well. Thus, magic_sabbat post isn't completely inane. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- mod speaking now : please avoid insulting thumbnails, thank you.

Parkour is pretty cool. I saw a guy doing it in Pittsburgh and landed on his shoulder/head. Not the softest landing in the world, I guess thats why I like dirt below my climbs.

My bro tried to do a little parkour on the way down from royal arches... he saw this little ramp and he said ok.. i'm gonna run and jump and skid on that ramp and then i'm going to jump again and land it. well.. he ran... jumped... skidded, then stopped skidding, then tipped over and then fell 15 feet onto his face. had he not stopped his forward momentum by smearing off 6 of his 10 fingertips he would have rolled down one of those death slabs in the north dome gully. it was fucking hilarious except i didn't know my way out and if he would have died then it would have really sucked to call the rangers.

I think that, if parkour grows much at all, it will be outlawed pretty damn quickly.

parkour and bouldering are alike in that they both attract a disproportionate amount of overly energetic yet somehow unambitious, going nowhere in life young men but parkour can be at least mildly interesting to watch, at least the first time, unlike bouldering

On a related note, avoiding the pissing contest.. What is this structure? I've seen it in several videos. What is it's purpose? Kinda a climbing wall? A sculpture?

majid_sabet wrote: el_layclimber wrote: I am with Majid, those guys are something else. I would say that it is similar to bouldering in that it has origins, finds inspiration in and derives moves from gymnastics. Like bouldering, it also involves bodily movement with little or no safety net. It is an individual sport, and can be participated in without any form of competition. Also, a lot of parkour involves climbing up stuff - sort of like bouldering. That kind of movement, whether on a rock or a brick wall, is all about letting your inner child and sense of play take over and turning the world into your playground. As far as being countercultural, I would say that for now parkour has climbing beat. Climbing has gone pretty mainstream. If you are looking for a sport that is not yet owned by corporate America, you have it... until Nike figures out how to market a parkour shoe. Bouldering looks like a joke when it comes to Parkour. While boulder rats are trying to get those pads in right position, parkour dudes are just flying over with nothing to worry about. well but flying...generally..is not climbing ;)
