We all know how hard it is to start the initial turn on the ice screw do you think that any modification needed or its all matter of technique I have my idea for a new design of ice-screw and I wonder where can I get the prototype done any input on these two thoughts is welcome

The last post was right on the money. I've found the most effective way to get a screw started is by aggressively jabbing the spike of your tool in the intended location for a screw. Give a few good whacks until you've got a pretty good hold (1-2"), then JAB! the screw in and start crankin'. Works almost every time.....jason

I agree it's all in where you start your placement - if the ice isn't soft (hero ice) then I'll chip out a little starter hole. I don't think 1-2" is necessary, I'd be worried about weakening the surrounding / surface ice with that much chipping, but a little starter hole goes a long ways.

Sorry fellows…. But I was wondering how would u void the whole starter hole all completely and just have a better design screw that penetrate an sit right at the first turn …we all know about the starting hole…I thought u guys have a different technique

You generally have to clear some ice anyways, probably at least 2/3 of the time in my experience, particularly on steeper pitches where you're going to get a more chandeliered (sp?) surface than on lower angle flows which will frequenly be reasonably smooth, so nicking a (small) starter hole at the same time is generally only a couple of extra swings, maybe 2-3.

Speak for yourself, geo.

I use my laser-beam vision to heat up the screw tip so it penetrates instantly. Starter holes are for the mundane.

So will the revolutionary new idea be revealed?
