I'm planning a trip up to Idaho to climb, but I've never been in the region (going there cause the our first choice is rained out). Where is a good, close, and preferably cheap place to camp at? Any other information regarding the area would be helpful.

We want to climb routes from 5.8 to 5.11 and it sounds like this area has plenty of those ratings. We would also like to do some bouldering, V0 to V4. Tell me if I'm not in the right spot.

Thanks for the info.

Local website with lots of good local/regional info

don't really have any info on cheap place to stay, but email me when yr coming and i will see if I can hook you up with something.

Question. Why the black cliffs? Most people here go out of their way to climb somewhere else. When it's 90-110 degrees out, saying it is miserable is an understatement. Go to the City of Rocks http://www.rockclimbing.com/...le_Rocks_State_Park/, or Derkies http://www.rockclimbing.com/..._Falls/Derkies_Lake/. Crappy columnar basalt is only worth driving about 30 minutes at the most, in my book.

email me if ya need anymore info.

Paul

Ah the Black Cliffs. Those were the days. I miss them sometimes. Then I realize I live in Alaska and it's twenty million times better. Fun times there though. As Paul said though hit up the City of Rocks. Go play in the Sawtooths. Elephant Rock for a week would be a total blast. Plenty of camping out there.

How ya been Paul?

Pretty good, climbing, climbing, climbing, working, climbing. How about you. Where ya been?

Hey, your Profile says your occupation is "Alpinist", is that new lingo for unemployed and broke. Because that sounds much better than "dirtbag climber"

We were going to go backpacking in Southern Utah, but flash flood warnings stopped us. Turns out it is raining everywhere that is fun and entertaining, except, it turns out, Boise.

City of Rocks has 60% chance of rain and we don't want to be rained out of our vacation.

Black Cliffs was sort of a last minute "here's a place with climbing" sort of deal.

city of rocks is a big place, plus you have Castle Rocks. unless the forecast is for rain, all day, every day i think you would be safe.

Haha... it is truly better sounding then dirtbag. I'm actually an Aerospace Weight and Balance Technician now. I'm in Atlanta, GA right now until the end of September then I'm off to New Mexico until December. Then back to the motherland of Alaska in time for some good ice climbing. When you coming up and climbing Denali with Tyson and I??

City of Rocks and Castle Rocks. You will be able to at least get some great climbing in. But also right outside of American Falls Idaho is Massacre Rocks which has tons of (at least 400+) sport routes on really decent basalt. Just be careful getting there, the road is sometiems sandy. Or keep driving for about two hours past boise to McCall to check out slick rock. There is an 8 pitch fully bolted 5.8
