That is to say, who is the best all-around climber today? Only rules are: 1) He/She must be presently climbing (eg not retired, or dead for more than 6 months), 2) not you; I'm sure you're great all around, and if you are somebody else will vote for you.

I have to put my vote on Dean Potter who has, on top of an impressive sport and trad record, some big firsts, including, but not limited to, the first sub 4 hour ascent of the nose on El Cap (with Tim O'Neil), solo first ascents on Fitzroy, as well as free solos on Cerro Torre and the afore mentioned Fitzroy, and an attempt to marry Steph Davis, successfully winning the ire of daydreamers like myself.

You forgot to mention Dean's not a hack boulderer or sport climber either (ie MS V and some CO/Yos bldr problems convince me oth this)!

Stevie Haston. Freeing long scary 5.13 mud routes in the Fisher Towers, incredibly hard ice and mixed climbing, and funny as hell.

Stevie Haston may be a good climber, but he is an inconsiderate drunk and mighty high on himself. Also, check the other forums or archives because there is quite a large discussion on this topic somewhere...

I saw Dean last month when I topped out on Scorched Earth. He was running down towards the East Ledges with a slightly worse-the-wear Scott Stowe in tow. Dean told me he had just FREE climbed both Half Dome - Regular NW Face and El Cap - Free Rider variation to Salathe Wall....

...in under 24 hours!

This is the first time this has been done.

That boy is bad to the bone.

Dean passed me, Josiah and Tony (nailzz) on the Regular Route on Fairview Dome in Tuolumne when we were at the RC.com Yosemite Gig in July... He was "simul-climbing" with another guy, and said that they wanted to get 6 Multi-Pitch Moderates in a day.

What kind of power bars does that guy eat ???
