Does anyone know of some good buildering in or around downtown Asheville? i'm stuck doing the 9-5 thing, and there's not enough time in a workday to get down to Rumbling Bald. A decent buildering spot would be sweet for a cheap (eg: not gym) midweek fix...if you know of a good spot, please lemme know!

I used to live in A-town too and spent years looking for a close place to boulder. It was pretty discouraging because I'd get back from visiting friends up at ASU and when we weren't up at Ship, we be at Howard's Knob (back before it got sold). There are some rock walls at UNCA here and there that can be traversed. Also, if you go down River Rd, along the French Broad, there are several cliffs and crags that would be decent if developed. Get a topo map and scope it out.
Otherwise, during daylight savings I'd just blast down to the bald and set up TR's around Friday the 13th / Golden Blend / Southern Boys area. You can get in a couple hours of climbing. (I realize you are trying to avoid this, but it's not a bad option).

Yeah--i went to school at App and got spoiled by the proximity to good rock. As for River Road, are you talking about on the way to Marshall? I've scoped some rocks out there as i drove by, but always worried about private property...probably still worth a stealthy look around, though.

UNCA is a good idea, too--i'll check it out. thanks.

on the mall side of beaucatcher tunnel, there's an interesting wall in the parking lot of the greyhound station. nothing too challengihng but better than nothing.

there's prolly also some good traverse lines on the 240 cut between downtown and the mall area. i'm suprised no one's put up a line of bolts on that face.

there's always the civic center, although i suspect that wouldn't be exactly smiled upon by the heat.

Yeah, i climbed up to one of the balconies on the civic center late one night and a security guard was waiting at the top. He let me go, but i won´t be doing that again (especially half drunk...)
