ok so im not that new to the sport.. buuut I do have one question that no one has told me a answer to. Is there a specific reason why people put tape on their biners? is it to remember the age.. drops.. or what?

I put blue tape on all my gear. Reason being that I associate with several other dirtbags that have the same gear, this way we know who gets what at the end of the day.

I figured the drops wasn't the reason with all hype about hairlines and junk.. but yah marking it makes sense.. hah I guess I don't climb with people that have their own gear to require me to mark mine..

Besides marking what's yours, if you use reflective tape then you can see stuff better at night.

You can Dingusize your rack mate! Here's what you do... take all of that shiney gear and lay it out individually on some newspapers. Then spray paint the stems of cams and spines of biners. Flip em and repeat. You can mark all your gear in about 2 minutes that way. It'll wear off in a year or two. Repeat as needed. Don't use red, its taken. Ditto Contractors Orange. And yellow, Brutus of Wyde has yellow LOCKED UP. How about soylent green? DMT

My wife made me put plum fingernail polish with metalic flake on all our hard gear. I am sooo000OO000o embarrassed. But it sticks, and no one steals our gear. (and we can match our gear markings to our matching shirts and socks! Yey! Oh God please let me mis-tie that clove hitch on the 4th pitch and call off-belay) j/k

dingus wrote: "If it's red it's mine!" DMT WHAT?! You bastard! Red is mine!! I know this guy who was told that red markings meant the gear wasn't safe to climb on. Then he saw my entire rack and his eyes got as big as saucers. Funny shit.

Somebody hung it up in a tree at the Leap a year ago. I took it because it was booty, my rack was miniscule at the time (I think it was actually an 11th of my rack), and...it was booty. I've been thinking of hanging it up in that same tree, but since it's Brutus', it's probably best he decide how to use that Christmas ornament himself...

adam3 wrote: I figured the drops wasn't the reason with all hype about hairlines and junk.. That is f-ing awesome. I'm sure I can come up with a use for that misnomer. I hate when I drop my biners and they get a receding hairline. Then they only want to trad climb. ..and you know what that does to me.

carbonrx8 wrote: My wife made me... I see who leads the pitches in this pair. Re: marking dropped gear and, "If it's red, it's mine." I don't tape my gear, but my mom marks hers with green. The odd biner that's questionable, but still has some utility in terms or racking or bailing or what have you, she marks with red so it doesn't get placed anywhere important... so feel free to lay claim and climb as hard as you want on them; I don't think she'd care too much.
