I'm spending a week in New Mexico shortly with family, who have expressed an interest in climbing.

I am fairly experienced but I will have my mother and daughter in tow. I'm looking for single pitch, beginner friendly areas near Tucumcari, New Mexico.
(note: I have my g/f, who is a regular climber partner on this trip as well, so there should not be any belayer issues).

This is North Eastern New Mexico, about an hour and a half to two hours west of Amarillo, Texas.

Any pointers to crags within a few ours (if there are any) would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-- Chris

That will be "West of Amarillo."

You'll be a good 3-4 hours north of my house. We have a nice area but it can be difficult learning. You may have better luck around Alb.

Just east of Albuquerque, there is a short single pitch cliff band a few minutes walk south of the Tijeras Ranger Station (Cibola National Forest). However, this is almost 2 1/2 Google-hours from Tucumcari and am not sure that it would be worth the drive: sharp rock and it faces SSW so can be hot. Edit: Palomas is not much further, includes a decent approach hike, but may not fit the "beginner friendly" criteria.

If you really don't mind stretching the driving hours, there are some nice moderate routes near White Rock in the Jemez Mountains. Gallows Edge comes to mind. Edit: There are other possibilities in the heart of the Jemez Mountains near an easy scenic hike but this is even more of a drive than to White Rock.

But these are really just suitable areas within a day's drive of Albuquerque. Might be something closer to Tucumcari.

Edit: More like 4 hours from Tucumcari there is El Rito which has some beginner friendly single pitch sport routes (e.g., School House rock). However, this is getting to be more of a weekend outing due to the length of the drive.
