I am wondering if any one has any info on caves in the tri state area.
I'm an experienced climber, but new to caving. I also want to bring a friend along with no experience.... so "easier" options would be nice.
Or any suggestions on where else to ask.

There are several old Mines that have been shut down for years. There in the Ringwood NJ Area. The mine area is near a part of NJ that is not normaly visited. Be respectfull and polite the the locals. Most of the families have lived there for over 100 years and visitors are not common.
I Don't have any further info but sure the ringwood police would know.

There are several grottos in the area. I don't cave, and don't have the info offhand, but have purused the sites in the past. Lots of good info out there. You can search....and you will find. (search the internet, I mean. not rc.com)

I believe happie means Grottos, as in the National Speleological Society groups that are local. And she is correct. Plenty of info on where and when the groups meet and how to contact them can be found from starting at the NSS website here:

However, they will most certainly NOT give out information on where the caves are to you. They will provide info on safe and environmentally friendly caving practices and MIGHT take you caving if you seem like a responsible person who is truly interested in caving and not just someone looking for a one-time adventure (sounds like you're the former, so you should have no problem).

I once took a pee in a cave. Does that mean I would not be allowed in the club?

Why exactly are cavers so secretive about this shit. I personally don't get caving and think it's dangerous what with all the albino cannibal west virginians that live down in those things.
I have nothing to add to this thread except that you should for some reason bring an ice tool when caving.

I went to Clarksville Cave in upstate NY and it was awesome. It was my first non-tour-guide cave and it's just fun to mess around in and get muddy. This site gives you all the info as well as maps of the cave systems:

Imagine the worst crag in your area, spraypainted and broken glass everywhere. Except you have to crawl on your belly in that broken glass.
Also, I've never participated in a rescue, but members of my grotto have and its a hassle. There are call lists that 911 has for cave rescue situations and these guys will have to get out of bed at midnight and drive 3 hours to the cave to rescue the local kids that went into the cave with 1 flashlight for 3 people and got stuck/lost/hurt (it's happened more than once).
The most important reason is just the delicate nature of caves. Stalactites that have been growing for thousands of years destroyed in 8 seconds by some punk that wants to sell it on eBay.

Thanks for the additional replys.
I have looked into the previous suggestions, which were all helpful. And, continue to dig around the net.
Still interested if anyone has info on caves in or close to PA.
FYI: I have a great respect for the earth, and will not tollerate otherwise from partners FWIW.
Aside for the Grotto's, any one interest in taking out a newb or two?
