I'm new to the area and am dying to find some climbing within an hour or two of Alamogordo. Anyone have any news?

The Tunnel, up route 82 toward Cloudcroft. Park on the west side of the tunnel. Most is up the hill though I think there's some on the other side of the canyon to the left. If you go across the canyon I hear it's much better to contour around farther up the road (other end of the tunnel).

So, I went up there this morning. These routes are crazy. I wish someone could map them out. At least point out which routes are able to be top-roped. Looks like near all of them are lead climb only. Haven't climbed in about a year and having that rather daunting view down, and the 3 foot ledge, makes for a rather jittery first experience. Any bouldering in the area, by chance?

I don't know about bouldering and I suspect that most or all of the routes were set to lead. I think the easiest routes there are one or two 5.9s and then jump into the 10s and beyond. Only been there once and route info seems pretty scarce.

Check out falcon guide's rockclimbing NM. Lots of Beta on most routes. If youre interested in climbing in Ruidoso I am developing alot of routes but because of time constraints its been hard. Could always use help. Anyways check out the Ski Run Rock and Alto Lake posts under routes in NM.

See Mountain Project at http://www.mountainproject.com/...the_tunnel/105916485 for detailed beta on some of the Tunnel routes. The routes are meant to be stick clipped, that's why the first bolts are so high above the sometimes bad landings. I'm not sure if any of the routes can be top roped as trying to get above the cliffs on the loose scree would be dangerous for you and everyone else around.

There's Pena Blanca just south of Las Cruces that has a lot of bouldering and is a bit closer than Hueco. Mountainproject has very few of the problems listed, but it has directions. http://v.crux.com has a more extensive guide, but seems to be down for updates right now. Directions here: http://mountainproject.com/...ena_blanca/105839039 http://mountainproject.com/...ena_blanca/105838919 About an hour (including approach) from Las Cruces there is also the Rough and Ready Hills which has easier routes than the Tunnel. Some of them can have top ropes set on them from the top as I recall, but pretty few. I can post directions for that too if you are interested. One of us could always swing by out there and help out if you need anything too!
