Here's a question for you. If you're climbing at the gym, doing routes and someone is traversing the wall along the bottom who has the right of way?

you mean top roping or lead? If your top roping and already on the wall, I don't see a problem with someone quickly going under you if your far up and out of leg distance. If you are on lead no one should EVER go under you.. it's an accident waiting to happen. if you have a rope tied in but not on the wall, I would let the person go by... you are off the wall.. the traverser is on.. only takes a second for him to get out the way.

At the gym (or chain of 3)where I work/climb anyone with a rope has ABSOLUTE right of way. Rope stretches, people get bonked on the noggin, end of story.

Excellent question! I've wondered the same thing. I've actually had someone boulder between me and the wall while I was lead-belaying at the gym and distract me, causing me to not hear my partner say "clipping" and, therefore, not feeding him rope and causing him to fall. Noone was hurt, but, it did seem awfully "not right" to me.

Great information for us all to know, as the weather will be taking us in to the gym more now. Anything else we should know (other than the usual common-sense stuff.)? JULES

Jules, As far as gym etiquette the only other thing to know is that the female climbers in a gym should wear near nothing at all times… it encourages good morale

I used to go to a climbing gym and started to use a new way to fix this. No one must leave the wall. So when you get anybody on your way, just talk to choose are you going up? or down? The funny thing is when 3 people at the same time crossed the same way. One for the middle, another on top and another below. Usually, the less experienced was left on the middle/below for safety. It was hard sometimes because a lot of holds where in use and sometimes they leave the little ones available. Happened bouldering and without rope, the highest point was like 8 feet. The weirdest thing happened once, when there were 4 people at the same time, including a woman. A friend going on an oposite way of hers choosed to pass not above or below, just over

ok -if you are walking around pay attention to people on tr who may swing far away from the wall or boulderers who may be dynoing. More people get hit walking through the bouldering area. They stop to look at people bouldering and get wacked when someone pops off. Pet peeves and helpful hints: - excessively hairy or fat men should keep their shirts on (goes for outside too of course) -do not use chalk pots without asking -do provide spots if you think they are necessary and let the climber know, mats/padding alone are not always enough -if you are not a boulderer you should not spray in the bouldering area. Remember that endurance is much easier to build than strength (applies to sport climbers only, if you climb hard trad, go ahead and spray) -do not talk to people while belaying, just keep your partner alive -learn to use a gri-gri -gym employees are climbers and people too, don't make a mess on the toilet seat.

some people find hairy people attractive... same with fat people... so I think anyone who wants to climb without a shirt should be allowed to.. my pet peeve just cause you don`t like it doesn`t mean you should oppose them.. why should you be the one to be able to do what you want.. maybe there are people who find your body offensive? But just cause you are not fat/hairy you can take your shirt off?

I am pale and hairy. I never take my shirt off. Don't go off and talk smack about freedom to do what you want to do. I listed it as my pet peeve, so deal with it.

Just let the gals take their shirts off and everyone’s happy! Kidding. This was about etiquette not pet peeves. One thing to keep in mind when bouldering.. don’t just grab a mat and use it. look around first and ask. One time some chick jut pulled my mat away just as I was finishing a problem.. I didn’t do anything but I was pissed.

thrillseeker05, great advice! Maybe if we girls took your advice we'd get any route we wanted, huh? JULES [ This Message was edited by: rocks4jules on 2002-10-08 16:53 ]
