I'll be down in EPC for most of winter and I'm wondering how dirt-bagging goes down there. I sure can't afford to stay at the hostel campground ($5 a day! No way!) so I'm hoping there's some forested areas nearby to sleep in and have gear be relativley safe? eh?

It's free to camp in the park, you may be robbed though.

If you have a vehicle you can go into the basin a ways and find a safe place where no one will touch your stuff. If you camp closer to the mouth of the basin there is a slight chance of being robbed, although it wouldn't be too hard to find a secluded, safe spot.

you should be able to find a place for $2 or $3 including hot showers and cooking facilities. Also the price of food at the markets more than makes up for the pay camping

imcd is right. All of the campgrounds (except La Posada) are open to negotiation, especially if you are staying for several months and can pay in advance.

I've heard of several dirtbags also working out deals with the campgrounds in which they work (such as clearing tables in the restaurants) instead of paying for camping.

Kind of on the topic.... Im graduating from college in december and will be heading down to EPC and hopefully travelling around with climbers where ever i can roam. I figure I can hitchhike with other climbers somewhere else when I get antsy. Has anyone randomly gotten rides from other climbers? Does it work as well as some people make it out to be?

One thing you should be aware of is that Mexico now has a new national airline with super-cheap fares from Monterrey to locations all over Mexico.

There will also be climbers travelling all over by car and it should be pretty easy to hook up with them, unless you're a total sleaze.

Two years ago the Canyon was open for free, some of my friends slept there close to "las agujas" there was water there and everything was ok.NOW the land owners are asking for 1 or 2 bucks if you want to cross and climb to the other side, you can make a deal with them and stay there.
Potreroed said you can talk with the camp owners and get a good discount. Last year paid close of 3 dlls for camping, stove, hot showers, i think the campgrond's name is "las auroras" not sure, but it should b e the last camp before enter the park
