My university is planning a trip for the climbing club out to Red Rocks around March 17 - March 24th. We may have up to 25 climbers, but odds are we will have 15 or less. Although we will split up during the day, we will all be staying together at night. With a group as large as 25 climbers, should we not try 13 Mile Campground? Or is 25 not too many? Obviously if it is realistic, we'll need to contact them as soon as possible to make sure we can get all the spots reserved. If not, I suppose we should just try to get the best rate we can on hotels in the area, eh? Thanks for any help!

ummmmm-hopefully you know about the couple of group sites out at the campground. spring break is a crowded time at red rocks and 13 mile. please just be respectful of keeping group size down during the day. it could certainly be a stretch to get that many in to the campground, and i would almost guarantee you won't be close by each other----definitely check out the group sites. colby (the school i went to) and dartmouth are out there every year around those times. you can contact the mountaineering club at either school and they will definitely help you out. but contact the 13 mile campground asap and make plans for one of the group sites. that is, hands down, the way to do it with a group that big. less of a hassle, no worrying about not enough room and a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a hotel room!!!

Thanks for your response. We're probably going to limit the group to 15-17 people. I've talked with someone at 13 mile campground and it looks like everything will work out just fine with that. Another question I have is about transportation around the area. Since driving down there (and back) would eat up a LOT of our trip time, we're thinking of flying down. Since none of us are older than 25, we won't be able to rent a car when we arrive. Would we be able to get around without having a car of our own? I know the campground is about a mile from red rocks, is there a bus or anything? We'd probably just taxi from the airport to the campgrounds, but what about after that?

you can probably rent a car, you will just have to pay more, but it will probably be your best bet cause it's like 2 miles from the camp ground to the gates of the park, and then another 2 miles to the sport crags, and don't even get me started on the trad approaches...

I hope you guys aren't going to take all 15 to one area, and instead split up to about 4 different areas. That might cause some problems.....

You're going to need cars. You should also be aware that if there are any paid instructors in your group that you will need a commercial use permit. These permits are competetive as there are only ten and many universities fight for them... Jason

The DMC would drive down in their school vans. They had a number of drivers and would switch off and drive straight down and it took them two days tops each way. I don't think there are many schools that are much further than Dartmouth. I think they had something like two weeks off though so four days wasn't a big deal. With just 3 people per car you could safely tag team the drive and go straight through. IMHO if you can do the drive in around 24 hours or less there is no point in flying.
