Hi I went climbing on Sunday. when I got to the crag, I unpacked my rucksack got my rope out, and started to getting my rack together while chatting with my partner. At that moment some fuckwits stray dog wondered up, lifted its back leg, and before I had the chance to kick the dumb mutt it pissed on my rope . I washed my rope as soon as I got home, but was wondering if anyone knows whether urine affects the integrity of a rope. For info it’s a 9mm mammut double rope.

Just pee on his dog. Then you're even. In other news, research suggests that urine is unlikely to be a catastrophic blow to your rope, but may slightly (~5%) lower its tensile strength and may decrease it's elastic properties somewhat (~25-33% decrease in drop test falls held): http://www.bdel.com/...p_archive.php#121806 Bottom line: You make the call. The urine exposure in these tests was far longer than what you've described, but apparently it can be an issue...

While the dog should have been on a leash, kicking it wouldn't have been a good idea. A sharp, loud, "HEY!" would probably have startled the dog enough to make it back up. That said, I doubt it's compromised the rope enough. If you're really concerned, tell the dog's owner "Here, you can have this rope, and I'll take $160 (or whatever it cost) in exchange." Next time, perhaps he'll be more aware and responsible.

Definitely not real bright. It could bite you in the foot and that would jack up your climbing. I recommend throwing rocks or hitting with sticks. Rocks are preferable because you can maintain a larger distance barrier. I wonder if there'll be a resurgence of the "I hate your dog" thread.

Urea is fairly acidic, depending on how hydrated the dog was. Did he seem parched...

I love crag dogs, but only the well behaved variety. I kept my Rottweiler clipped to my pack for years and never had the first piece of gear stolen, imagine that. Then again he never pissed on anybody's gear or tried to bite anybody either. I say smack the dog on the nose, take it away from the owner and give it to somebody who can make it behave. And, hell, smack the owner too, it's really his fault.

Best way I've seen a dog handled at the crag was at Moore's Wall, NC this past spring. Owner had the dog on leash, plugged a cam into a crack at the base of his climb, clipped the leash to the cam and went about his day. Well done.

Im tellin ya freakin Indiana the crag dog from hell tried to take my whole hand off at looking class a month or so ago. That dog was blood drunk or something. Good thing it was on a leash. All the owners did was yell down from the route they were on. Didn't really do anything to calm the beast. Ben as far as your cats go. I really wouldn't consider that orange one you have a cat. It's its own species...

I bet the dog was named "Biner" or "Tricam". I think it is some sort of rule for dog owners who climb.

I love the way you all lash out at an animal but didn't or wouldn't do anything at the time. Maybe the lesson is watch your gear better??? We have a "craig dog" and she is great. I have seen some blocking the trail and went right by. You washed your rope and you learned a lesson. All of you that sound like you are in grade school GROW UP! BTW hurting someone else's dog is a good way to get yourself hurt! If you can't get along then you don't belong on the craig!

If I run into your car can I say "you should of been watching your car better". Its not his job to watch your dog. I refer you back to stagg54's post.

The fact is he didn't say anything to the owner, which I would have. Instead he rants about wanting to hurt an animal. Which you dont seem to care a bit about? All the other posts add to kick the owner? You are a responsible owner of 4 dogs and none of them has ever gotten into trouble? So, one of your dogs slips his leash and steals a sandwich while you are on the craig. It is all right for me to kick your dog or maybe just your ass? Right? Sorry but in Colorado if you have a problem with someone you approach it like an adult. If I have a problem I confront them and talk to the person again like an adult. All this post is about is crying about something he wanted to do to an animal. Nothing more. So clean your rope off and move on with life. This belongs in RANTS & RAVES on Craigs list

I don't think the post is solely about ranting and raving, but rather reminding people to watch their dogs. Further, it's the internet, we can say we would have shot the fucking dog on the spot, but in reality no one would (maybe). Don't come onto this forum, and had the audacity to say that we are acting like children. I would be super pissed (no pun intended) if a dog came over and whizzed on my rope. It was the owners responsibility to keep an eye on their dog. We shouldn't have to keep an vigilant eye on our shit while we rack up. Also, your analogy about a sandwich is messed up on the fact that a sandwich costs maybe 5 bucks, while a rope is intended is your life-line and costs an easy 200 bucks. P.S. why are you saying we should go to the craig...its crag. We're not selling shit on the internet.

I don't drag my dogs to the crag or other public places filled with people. My dogs are taught young with choke collars not to tug on a leash. Its still my bad if they get loose. I don't seriously advocate kicking the dog, anymore than you should advocate someone watching their stuff better. In a rosie colored ideal world, everyone would behave like grownups. But also in a rose colored world, someone elses dog wouldn't piss on somebody elses rope.
