So, today my copy of The Self-Coached Climber arrived in the mail, I paged through it and got excited to see looooots of full-color, glossy photos. After I finished up with paging through, I checked out the DVD. As I was pulling it out, I noticed something--it was cracked! Now, I've got this whole book today, and I also received John Long's "Climbing Anchors" yesterday. Needless to say, I've got plenty of other things to keep me busy, but I was wondering: am I missing out much with the busted DVD? I know there is a red point documentary on there and some other videos. I assume that the videos on the DVD only further describe what's in the book, and there is nothing completely new that the book doesn't touch on. Is that right? Thanks!

Red point documentary is filled with stuff that book doesn't touch on. (Not to mention the visual examples of training exercised is worthwhile alone.) I don't think you'll be sorry if you make an effort to get the DVD replaced.

The original DVD that came with my book had problems reading. I contacted the manufacturer, explained the problem and they replaced it. They got the new DVD off to me super quick too, it was pretty cool of them.

Perhaps it's just me... however, I found the book itself to be overly technical. I don't think I made it past the second chapter. However, the DVD was great. The video-illustrations of gym training exercises, the redpoint attempt, etc. were all extremely accessible and interesting. Perhaps due to the nature of the subject (movement), there's really no substitute for seeing things in motion. Definitely get the DVD replaced... it's worth the price of the package. Dan

I have been thinking of getting this book myself. Has everyone found it to improve their climbing ability/technic/grade/skill? Currently I'm climbing at about 5.9, which is where I mostly climbed before I got out of climbing. But just before I stopped climbing regularly, I hit a couple of 5.10's, much to my excitement. What the consensus on the book? The few reviews in the gear section are positive. Thanks, Don

I find it overly long and boring for what it covers. But more importantly it is the only book I know of that describes climbing movement in a way that that teaches you to use that knowledge to improve your climbing - even if you intuitively do much of what it covers. I’ll have to give the DVD another try.

Little question here. I've heard a lot of good / excelelnt critics about this book, and thought about ordering it. Amazon proposes it w/ or w/o the DVD ($12 of difference). BUT... is an american DVD visible on a french computer / TV??? I remember that US videotapes were not compatible on french VCRs.

(an english dvd was not viewable on a us dvd player) I don't know about the french standards, and if the problems will be exactly the same. In any case, any computer DVD player can read the disk. However, the dvd player was programed to only switch readable formatting like 6 times total. Then you were stuck with the final format forever. So, it seems like you would be able to view the disk, but you might not be able to view it a million times (unless they were a million consecutive viewings).

I would also sugest contacting Stackpole books and see if they can shed some light on the DVD format they're publishing. http://www.stackpolebooks.com/...polebooks.storefront

You must watch the DVD. The training exercises are explained very well and the Red Point attempt video is a must see. It's inspiring for all climbers, it's encouraging to know that falling is a huge part of the process at becoming better. The Petzl Roc Trip video is pretty cool too.

I ordered my copy from Amazon.com (US) and the DVD was region free and played fine. The DVD is essential and compliments an excellent book.

The biomechanical analysis and a truly effective training plan are proven to help sport and gym climbers do harder sport and gym routes. For hardish trad climbing 12b+ it really isn't practical. The routes of that grade are too few and far between, making the pyramids etc impossible to achieve without a Star Trek teleporter. It's quite possible I'd see good results if I trained on sport or gym routes then occasionally climbed hard trad. Climbing routes that don't interest me simply doesn't interest me though, so I haven't and probably won't explore that option.

If anyone out there is finished with their book/DVD, I wouldn't mind buying them for a reasonable 2nd hand price.
