general question here:

what is the rule of law on climbing in public lands in missouri?

Illinois seems to run by " you CAN climb unless we say you CAN'T."

Is missouri the same way?

I've tried asking the conservation folks locally, and everyone wants to know the exact area I'm asking about so they can see what it says. but I'm not really asking about any specific area and no one can seem to come up with a blanket policy on climbing in the state of missouri.

Several areas require permits from the ranger station, I'm aware of that. And I'm aware of established climbing areas with specific rules against bolting. but i would be greatly appreciated if anyone could point me towards some general information about the state's law/policy on climbing on public land.

Thanks.

You should be fine in the national forests, and currently only one state park allows it and that is elephant rocks but that is only bouldering no equipment allowed, Johnson's shut ins use to allow it with a permit but last time I showed up there they said no and if you did gear would be confiscated car towed and you in jail, trying to get the access fund to look into this, so stay out of the state parks though, routes on here are all mostly allowed unless access issues noted, more than likely the way the gov is if you ask them too many questions and all/make them aware of what is going on they will ban it (if it is not posted in the area regulations go for it then contest it if they catch you)

excellent info thanks.
The last bit is pretty much what I'd suspected and proceeded with.
I can always claim ignorance... it's no defense, but they might take it easy on me.

Which state parks allow rock climbing and rappelling (by permit only)?

This activity is allowed only during certain months. A permit is required and may be obtained by contacting the park prior to your visit.

Elephant Rocks State Park
Lake of the Ozarks State Park
Meramec State Park (rappelling only)
St. Francois State Park

I saw that on mostateparks.com
