It's a tad more detailed. Google "Jack Mileski and beta" and you'll get a more definitive answer.

I always thought it evolved from "Plan B" because Beta means 'B'.

betamax predates VHS, yes. but if you took video of someone climbing you could share the beta with other climbers.....
