I/m spending a week in San Francisco over new years. are any of the "bay area" climbs on RC.com actually near sanfrancisco? I will be on foot and on my own the whole week, so trips half way to LA (indian rock) are out of the question. does any one have any suggestions?

There's a spot called beaver street wall on, get this, beaver street. a couple toprope routes on weird slick rock.

There's also some bouldering in Glen canyon park. The park is pretty nice.

Neither are great climbing, but that's all I know of in SF itself. Directions should be in the routes database.

If you're willing to take the Bart and hoof it a little (about 2 miles from the Bart station), Indian Rock / Mortar Rock in Berkeley has a bit of bouldering.

Enjoy your trip!

Mount Diablo is a great place for sandstone. (you'd have to get a ride, it's in Concord, but is well worth the drive) Bart goes out there, but you'll need a bike to get from the station to the gate. Pine Canyon is your best bet. Don't be fooled by people whining about the approach and the routes. The approach is nothing, a simple hike with a steep final bushwack on established trails (oxymoron i know)
Also, depending on your ability, catch a car ride to Mickey's beach. Amazing sport climbing but no public trans to get there.
