I dunno about all that, but there has been plenty of hashing over the SUM, that's for sure.

i've used it and love it for smaller diameter ropes and clipping bolts. so, for hard sport climbing it seems about perfect. the coolest feature is that it is directionally sensitive, in order to feed out rope, you hold the device at a downward angle. in this position, it feels as if there is no friction at all. as soon as the device is raised (by you, or a sudden jerk on the rope) it locks up. as with anything, it requires some adjustment, but it is a wonderful answer to the small diameter rope problem posed by the gri-gri.

I bought one based on someonne raving about them.

I have used a Gri Gri, Cinch, Sum and Eddy quite a bit. I own the last 3 and my main pard owns the Gri Gri.

The best device for normal climbing in my opinion: Trango Cinch. Hands down, no question.

BTW, if you are buying a used one, be careful that you do not buy the first gen Cinch, I tried it and thought it sucked big when it first came out, jerky lowering fer sure. Maybe I've changed, or maybe they've changed, but Cinch is it.
