So, I live in West Virginia and I have never been out west except maybe flew to Texas...But this summer i am going on a road trip out west. I plan on climbing a lot in boulder canyon as a first stop. I will probably stay there for about 3 weeks. The thing is...I will be sleeping in a tent during this entire trip...does anyone know a good place that I can camp for free for the 3 weeks...Also, are there many regulations just for camping at the crags and what not? Thanks a lot!

Free camping around boulder is pretty hard to come by. the best place to camp is on someone's floor. Camping and overnight parking are verbotten in the canyon. There is alot of public/forest service land in the general area, but my advice is that if you are going to be there for that long, it's worth paying to camp at an established campground where you won't have to worry about some one hiking through the woods, finding your tent, and taking it. and 3 weeks is too long to set up and take down a tent everyday.

I see...I am assuming that is $10 a night...We are really tight on cash because this is an entire summer road trip so we will be sleeping in a tent the entire summer...my next stop will be Yosemite then Smith Rock after that so I hope i can find free camping there...which i think you can in Yosemite if you have a backcountry permit...thanks a lot

Do a search on this. It has been discussed before. If I remember there is the forest service stuff and a few other places. If you are going to be in the area that long, I would check out more places. I think there was a place by nederland mentioned in another thread.

Sort of, kinda, maybe....but there's a quota for each trailhead from May - Sept. and you need to provide the park service with a detailed itinerary including destinations, number of nights out, entry and exit trailheads, etc. A bear canister for food storage is also required. Basically, if you're looking for free camping in Yosemite, you'll need to stay outside of the park. Make sure to weigh the cost of camping in the park with the cost of gasoline - which is currently almost $4.00/gal in the park and on the east side. See: http://www.nps.gov/...lderness/permits.htm http://www.yosemite.org/visitor/camping.html http://www.yosemitefun.com/...derness_protocol.htm

I appreciate being tight on cash, and I appreciate free camping as much as the next dirt bag, but it's hard to come by, especially during the summer months because that is peak camping season. if it's $10 a night and there are 2 of you for 3 weeks, that 's $105 per person. which is a considerable chunk of change when on the road, but camping without a permit fines are expensive too. In all honesty, you should be able to earn 100 bucks with no more than 1 or 2 days worth of work, so delay the trip for 2 days and work just a little more. OR you can try and share a site with other people, I've done this a few times and it's a nice money saving trick, as well as a fun way to meet new people. Camping in yosemite for cheap is an art unto itself, there are tons of tricks, none of them legal. Camp 4 is only 5 bucks a night and there are (questionably legal) ways around the 2-4 week limit. I have done the road trip thing, and I know what it's like to work and save all you can just to live on the cheap, scavenge, and dumpster dive in order to keep climbing, however in the end, it does take some money to go on a trip and if you don't have that minimum amount, then I think it's best to delay the start of the trip and get it or have a plan to make some on the trip. Nothing sucks worse then calling the folks to beg for money for a flight/bus/gas home cause you ran out of money early and can't get home.
