No such luck man....hotels are a major rip off around here....mountainlair.com has a list of all hotels with features/rates/phone #'s. Just remember the front gate @ Coopers is closed so you will have to hike 3 - 3.5 miles to reach Roadside Rocks.

Most of the stuff on Mountainliar seemed a bit posh...I was thinking more like a motel six/holiday inn or something. Did the hike last weekend and didn't find it too bad. It is on a freaking road after all.

The econo lodge is like $50/night.....that is pretty much as cheap as it gets here. You are right the hike isn't too bad...we went out on Monday and it was cold as ballz. FYI- a ranger has been seen around the overlook so if you get caught on it you will probably be shellin out some $$$$.

I bet you could get lower rates if they were empty on a particular weekend. Just call them and say, I am willing to pay ___ do you have empty rooms that you would fill for that price? Sorry, I don't know anyplace to suggest myself.

The biggest factor in hotel rates is the events happening that weekend. Avoid weekends with hoops or concerts. Also, some parents are in town this weekend so prices will be steep. Call Adventures Edge and ask them if they have any contacts/deals for rooms (ask for mike or jan).

So you're right on the money; you can climb year round, but they shut the gate in the winter for some reason. Maybe something to do with hunting? Thanks for the info WVUCLIMBER, I'll give Adventure's edge a ring and short of that, maybe try the econolodge.

Stop at the visitor center on interstate 79 and get the motel cupon book. There are a cpl in fairmont or south fairmont kinda reasonable. That is about thirty miles one way though.

Charley is right. If you are willing to be 30-45 minutes from coopers you can probably get a room for 30-50$. Fairmont is more like 45min-1hr from coopers. Any time I need help or information I stop in at adventures edge and just ask. If you are looking for a guidebook here is the best one i've found online. http://www.trails-edge.com/climb/coopers/cr_sun-big.htm
