I don't know much about climbing in Cortez, but there's certainly some in that area, as well as a few lesser known gems between there and Rico. There's also plenty of climbing in the Telluride area, as well as in the desert to the north of you. For example, Big Gypsum Valley, 16Z and Paradox Valley. You're also not too far from Indian Creek or Moab, either.

Thanks. Living so close to the Creek will be great. I'm trying to find an after work crag. I won't be out there until june, but it never hurts to plan ahead. Is there a guidebook out for the area? Part of the desert rock series maybe?

In reply to: There's also plenty of climbing in the Telluride area, hey, saw the post and thought I's ask. I am going to be in Telluride In June for about a week. I'll only be able to get out for a few days, where is the highest concentration of high quality trad routes? Cracked Canyon? thanks.

cracked canyon and the ophir wall are probably the best and highest concentration of quality trad routes in the area. there are a few other cool spots, but if you've only got a few days, head to those areas and you won't be disappointed. cracked canyon is probably a little better in terms of being able to find shade, but both are outstanding climbing. pick up the third edition of 'telluride rocks' (if you haven't already) by charlie fowler and damon johnston when you're in town and it will have all the info you need. you're going to want a full rack for both areas as placements run the full gamut from micro to wide hands/OW.

Hey, So I'll be In Telluride in june, and from the looks of things on the net, spend my time at Cracked Canyon/ Ophir wall. As the Guide book is not available be here, I was hoping to get some local knowledge before I get there. I am interested in the best gear shop in town, where folks would recommend camping, and as I'll only have a limited amount of time, if any locals want to hook up to show off the area?? Thanks.

June will be a nice time to be climbing here in the high country. I will be in Oregon for June and July so I won't be able to show you around. But you might find some people. As for your questions, now that the Telluride Mountaineer is closed (too bad), Paragon Sports is definitely the best option for climbing gear and local knowledge. They might be able to find a partner for you as well, but unlikely. You will probably meet some people in Cracked Canyon, or by the Ophir Wall. You could also pick up the bouldering guidebook (written by me :-P) and check out the local blocks if you can't find a partner. You'll probably meet some people that might be interested in climbing with you. Last but not least, for camping there are several options. There is free camping at the base of the Ophir Wall. The rest is pay camping. One of the best spots is in Telluride Town Park since it's only a two minute walk to downtown. There are also three National Forest Campgrounds: the Matterhorn Campground, Sunshine Campground and Ilium Campground. All of these are a short drive to town and the climbing. The Ilium Valley campground is a five minute walk from one of Telluride's best bouldering areas. You can find information for all of these areas online. Definitely reserve ahead of time. Hope that helps.

Alright, so now I'm in Shiprock, NM. I have to say that the dakota sandstone in Ilium is some of the best rock I've ever climbed on. I've also put up some new problems outside of Shiprock, if anyone is interested I'll give directions, or meet you to show you the boulders.

You still living in Shiprock. I just moved there and am curious about where you're bouldering. Hit me up if you're ever needing a partner or just some more peeps to hang with.
