I am attending a conference in april at the Anehiem Convention center near DisneyLand. I will have lot of free time to kill in afternoons, any local bouldering close or a gym I should check out? Trying to decide if I should rent a car during my time there...this would be a big determining factor if there was some climbing close.

You're visiting SoCal from Iowa during prime climbing season, and all you're going to do is go to the gym in the afternoon? Jay

Jay Hey, hey, hey, don't be daft...I don't want to go to a gym if there is rock close. I just don't know if I will have a full day to head too far from my conference. I would be completely psyched for some close bouldering.

There's some marginal bouldering that one of the Orange County people can tell you about, but geeze, take an extra day and go to J Tree or Tahquitz, or even New Jack City. Jay

You can find info in the route database under Orange County. From Anaheim, you're looking at around 20 minutes to get there... and Jay is right, JTree in April will be amazing.

The closest climbing gym is the, recently expanded, Rock City, in Anaheim Hills. It’s mostly bouldering, with some short leads and top-ropes, but it’s a low hassle, comfortable environment. Rockreation is in Costa Mesa. It may not be any further away but traffic will be worst. It’s the better gym, but be ready to take your belay test and lead test because the staff is a little anal. Pm me if you need a partner..
